  1. Edible science PROCEDURE Pour juice into the smaller zip-lock bag.  Squeeze out excess air and seal. Place the small bag filled with juice inside the larger bag. Fill the larger zip-lock bag with crushed ice so that it surrounds the juice bag. Add salt to the ice liberally. Squeeze out excess air and seal the large bag containing everything. Massage and shake the bag so that the salty ice is constantly coming into contact with the juice bag. Continue squishing for 5-10 minutes, observing the changes in how the juice looks and feels. MATERIALS

  2. WHATHAPPENS? The juice gradually solidifies and turns into a SLUSHY! Water freezes at 32ºF / 0ºC Adding an impurity (salt) to ice lowers its freezing point. The ice wants to melt back to water, but to do this it needs to absorb heat from somewhere – in this case, the juice.  Heat is transferred from the juice to the ice, freezing the juice. This is an endothermic process (heat is absorbed).

  5. GUMDROP STRUCTURES MATERIALS PROCEDURE Build a tower by sticking toothpicks into gumdrops. The gumdrops are the connectors. Place the structure on the Jello tray. Agitate the Jello tray to simulate an earthquake. This will test the stability of the structure. Watch what happens…

  7. EXPLODING LUNCH BAG MATERIALS PROCEDURE Put ¼ cup of warm water into the zip-lock bag. Add ½ cup of vinegar to the water in the bag. Put 3 teaspoons of baking soda into the middle of the tissue. Wrap the the baking soda up in the tissue by folding the tissue around it. Partially zip the bag closed but leave enough space to add the baking soda packet. Put the tissue with the baking soda into the bag and quickly zip the bag completely closed. Put the bag in the bucket and step back. The bag will start to expand, and expand, and if all goes well…POP!

  8. WHATHAPPENS? The baking soda and the vinegar eventually mix (the tissue buys you some time to zip the bag shut) When they do mix, you create an ACID-BASE reaction and the two chemicals work together to create a gas (carbon dioxide – the stuff we breathe out) It turns out gasses need a lot of room and the carbon dioxide starts to fill the bag, and keeps filling the bag until the bag can no longer hold it any more and….
