  1. CHPS Implementation Status Chris Dietz, Jon Roe OHD HL HSEB

  2. CHPS Budget FY10 National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  3. Special Note Regarding CHPS Budget • FY10 is the highest of the multi-year CHPS budget • Project Manager needs to more closely monitor expenses • PLEASE HAVE YOUR ADMIN SEND COPIES OF TRAVEL VOUCHERS TO CHRIS: Email PDF file to Christine.Dietz@noaa.gov OR Fax the voucher to 301.713.0963 • For ALL travel beginning Jan 1, 2010 billed to CHPS account # National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  4. CHPS Contracts • Deltares (Principal Development) • Basic CHPS implementation • Funded through September 2011 • Deltares supplemental training & development tasks • Includes tasks pushed out of main contract due to extended efforts on IFD • Funded through December 2011 • Via RTi AHPS contract; currently being processed • Deltares Support & Maintenance • Includes continued RFC operational support, FEWS software maintenance, additional CHPS training-by-request • 1 base year with 3 option years • Approx 40 hours/month • Via RTi AHPS contract; currently being processed National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  5. Schedule National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  6. Notes on Schedule • CAT RFCs: ABRFC, NERFC are running pre-operational; sometimes re-run automated migration scripts; fine tuning configurations; analyzing forcings. • CAT-II RFCs: just beginning migration • On schedule? Depends how we define parallel operations! • Different for each RFC • What is meant by “operational”? • Baseline Operational Capability (BOC) [ref. BOC-II document] • Each RFC identifies its own readiness to go operational • Goal: Summer 2011 all 13 RFCs using CHPS operationally • What is not in BOC-II? • HEFS beyond Graphics Generator • Distributed Modeling into CHPS baseline • Verification into CHPS baseline • CHPS transition into AWIPS baseline National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  7. CHPS Installations • CHPS “Migration” hardware installed at all RFCs • 2 sets (online duty + online standby) at CAT RFCs • 1 set (online duty) at CAT-II RFCs • Final set (online standby) at CAT-II RFCs expected October 2010 • CHPS software now installed at all RFCs – all RFCs have same version USE IT OR LOSE IT – begin Migration activities immediately after training; continue to keep up Migration activities; don’t stop when you hit a road-block – seek help! National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  8. CHPS Project Activities Focus for upcoming slides Deltares Software & Support OHD Software CAT (status updates to follow) National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  9. Deltares Activities • CHPS Operational Support • Focus now expanded to include CAT-II RFCs • FEWS core software development • IFD – still tweaking, but mostly done • Performance – major improvements ongoing • Software bug fixes • Migration scripts • Enhancements and bug fixes for CAT-II RFCs • HEC-RAS – coordinating bug fixes with HEC • ResSim – in testing • Quarterly software releases • Conduct quarterly Software Acceptance Tests (SAT) at OHD • Package up OHD software, HEC-RAS, and FEWS software into CHPS releases • Next SAT in March 2010; focus more on “ad-hoc” testing • Currently delivering monthly software patches • Guide/monitor performance testing National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  10. OHD Activities Software development for CHPS BOC • FFG/FFH • Performance improvements • Identifying Linux/HEC-RAS bugs • Quarterly SAT with Deltares CHPS non-BOC • Calibration design - underway • Text product generator (RVF) – not started CHPS enhancements • HEFS/Graphics Generator – Phase 1 prototype deployed • XEFS – still in science development • Verification (EVS) – still in science development • Distributed Modeling – still in science development Non-CHPS software • MPE/DQC enhancements – ongoing; next batch of “show stoppers” recently identified National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  11. Deltares  NWS Transition (1) Software Releases: • Deltares currently “owns” CHPS releases; need to hand over to NWS • Content/prioritization • Still with Deltares for now; will change later in 2010 • Regression Testing (OHD) • Clean-up of Deltares’ SAT test procedures • Add scripted “batch” tests • Add tests when chps_ops reveals a missing test scenario • Impact on Quarterly release schedules: • FEWS to be released to OHD at Quarterly milestone without CHPS components • OHD to conduct CHPS testing and full FEWS regression testing • OHD to package up CHPS and distribute • OHD is currently training 2 HSEB staff members to take on release management • Migration scripts to be handed over to OHD(?) National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  12. Deltares  NWS Transition (2) Operational Support • Refer to HSD’s presentation yesterday • OCWWS HSD: • Training – • 2 HSD staff attended Migration Training in 2009 and 2010 • Local one-on-one mentoring with realistic “homework exercises” • Encourage active participation on chps_ops • Hand over “Support Log” (future use of more robust Trouble Ticket system) • OHD • Dedicate some % of existing resources (could start immediately) • Training – • 1 HSEB and 1 HSMB staff attended Migration Training in 2009 • 2 HSEB and 2 HSMB staff attended Migration Training in 2010 • Local one-on-one mentoring with realistic “homework exercises” • Buddy support • CAT RFCs more experienced (> 1 year) • BUT… support will be highly dependent on RFC workload • O&M contract with Deltares will allow them to provide FEWS-only software maintenance for RFCs • Concern? OHD currently addressing CAT request to allow Dutch access inside AWIPS firewall National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  13. CHPS Training National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  14. Notes on Training For RFCs: • Draft Training Plan is underway • NWSTC included in training as of October 2009 • Lesson learned: too high a teacher/student ratio dilutes experience for all • Request from Jim Poole, NWSTC: please make sure the correct people attend the System Manager class For the broader Hydrologic community: • Deltares is offering first of FEWS Configuration Training classes in May 2010 (see flyers) • Add-on class also available for NWSRFS-to-CHPS Migration training • Special government rate expected National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring

  15. CHPS Community Activities • Research • Deltares to provide CHPS “packages” to CUAHSI • CHPS software + FEWS software + pre-agreed RFC Configurations • CUAHSI to distribute CHPS to research community • Other/RFC-specific National HIC Meeting, February 2010, Silver Spring
