  2. What is ZAGS “загс”? • The Department of Registration of Civil Statuses • ZAGS is the first step in wedding planning. • The ZAGS registration is a rather short ceremony. • During this ceremony, couples exchange vows, rings, sign their registry, and are then pronounced husband and wife.

  3. What types of ceremonies take place? • Church ceremonies take place, only if the ZAGS registration is complete. • Church Ceremonies take place in Russian Orthodox Churches • Civil ceremonies also take place, which is the the ZAGS registration.

What is the Ransom of the Bride: • Also called Vykup nevesty • He is not allowed to pass until the family believes he has demonstrated some of his talents or has paid his dues. • strength, intelligence, and various other skills. • This Russian tradition is performed on the way to the ZAGS department. • The challenges has manifested itself to funny challenges for the groom. • Tradition that is lighthearted

  7. What is the Wedding Loaf (Karavay)? • A tradition that has been borrowed from Romans. • The loaf is a sign of health and prosperity. • This is also a way the couple finds out who will be the head of the family. • this is determined by the newlywed that takes that largest bite.

What do Russians immediately do after the ceremony takes place? • Progulka: Touring of the city! • They visit historical Sites and monuments • Usually they tour the city in a vintage car or limousine • During the tour of the city, they release pigeons to determine the gender of their first child. • Groom ties a blue ribbon bride ties a pink ribbon and the pigeon that flies the highest. • Also, couples release “fireworks of butterflies” • Colorful boxes filled with butterflies

What is a Wedding Feast? • It is the reception or feast. • most meaningful event • Comprised of many Russian and Western borrowed traditions. • Most important role at the reception is the toastmaster (tamada) or the host. • this person is the friend or relative. • As the newlyweds enter, the quest have to reply with cries of “Gorko” or “Bitter.” • A simplified version of the quintessential marking if a Russian wedding. • Their first dance is the main attraction

  10. What typically goes on at a reception?? • Loud Singing • Dancing • Long Toast • Abundance of Food and drinks • Guessing of Russian Songs

  11. How long do the wedding reception last? • The wedding registration process takes two days. • The wedding celebrations and traditions take one to two weeks. In total wedding festivities last up to two days to one weeks.

  12. Why do Russians Shout Gorko!!?? • This is an old tradition that means cries of bitter and it is followed by kisses from the newlyweds • In the past the bride would carry a tray full of vodka for her guest and the guest would confirm by yelling Gorko and then get a kiss from the bride

  13. What happens with champagne glasses at the reception? • A close friend or relative makes a toast to the newlyweds • Everyone throws their glasses on the floor • If the glasses break when they hit the floor it is considered good luck

  14. What is Krazhanevesty? • A lighthearted tradition • The Groom must keep his bride insight throughout the entire reception • If not she can be taken by one of his friends • Then she will be sold for ransom back to the Groom
