  4. Politics • Diamond decision (March 2000) • Strong local support • NWDA (North West Development Agency) • Local universities (Manchester & Liverpool) • NWDA will pay for 4GLS building work • £25m Campus project Abingdon, June 2003

Timescales • March 02 Scientific case approved (Gateway 0) • November 02 Business case approved (Gateway 1) • March 03 £8m funding for prototype accelerator • August 05 Prototype complete • April 06 Preliminary results from prototype • Summer 06 ?? Approval for 4GLS procure and build Abingdon, June 2003

  6. Energy Recovery Linac Prototype • £8m funding over 3 years • Gain experience with ERL and photo-cathode guns • 500 KeV electron gun • 5 MeV SCRF booster cavity • 50 MeV ERL • Very tight budget and timescales • Re-use existing buildings and equipment where possible Abingdon, June 2003
