  8. History • 1652- Dutchest. a provisions station at Cape Town (supplied ships with fresh food) • Then the French and Germans arrived • Colonists were known as Boers or farmers Jan van Riebeeck and the Dutch East Indies Company arrive at Cape Town

  9. History (Continued) • 1814- British gained control of the Cape Colony • Led to the Great Trek • Many Boers moved away from British rule • Migration led to wars with the indigenous tribes • Settlers were called Voortrekkers • Established two free states

  11. History (Continued) • 1899-1902- Gold and Diamonds discovered in Boer territory so the British took control of the land- Boer Wars • 1910- Land was united under the Union of South Africa (Two British Colonies Plus Two Defeated Boer Colonies)

  13. History (Continued) • 1960- African National Congress was banned for their anti-apartheid stance- many were jailed- including Nelson Mandela • 1961- Independence from Britain

  14. History (Continued) • 1989- Frederik Willem de Klerk took office • Freed Mandela and other prisoners • Desegregated public facilities • Has not ended violence but it has improved

  15. History (Continued) • 1994- Mandela was elected President • 1996- New Constitution and Bill of Rights which guaranteed certain rights

  18. Government • President is chosen by an elected Parliament (majority party) • Parliament contains two houses: • 400 seat National Assembly- elected by the people • 90 member Council of Provinces- Elected by 9 Provincial Parliaments Pretoria- Administrative Capital of South Af.
