The epidemic challenge • Over the next several weeks, your challenge is to jumpstart an epidemic, attempting to bring it to a “tipping point.” • You will be documenting your efforts and focusing on the key factors gladwell discusses in his novel the tipping point. • You will compile your documentation into an original format and provide explanations, reasoning, and connections to the text. • This project is worth 200 points.
requirements The following items must be included in your final project: • Detailed explanation of the epidemic • At least 4 pieces of evidence documenting your efforts to bring the epidemic to a tipping point • Complete and thorough explanation of each piece of evidence discussing the effort made and how it ties to what you’ve learned from the text • A final response reviewing the epidemic and its’ success or failure
The epidemic • The first requirement asks that you explain the epidemic you are attempting to bring to a tipping point. • Your explanation must do the following: • Provide some background on epidemics in general • Provide a thorough overview of the proposed epidemic • Give a preview of how you will be trying to spread the epidemic • Predict the success of your epidemic
Documentation • As you go about spreading the proposed epidemic, you must keep track of your efforts. Examples of documentation include: • Photos • Videos • Petitions • Screen shots • Collection of pick pocketed notes • Other types of evidence detailing efforts
documentation • You must have at least 4 pieces of documentation • Including more than four may be of benefit to you, but are not required • The four required pieces of documentation must include the following: • Some type of evidence relating to connectors • Some type of evidence relating to mavens • Some type of evidence relating to salesmen • Some type of evidence relating to stickiness
Explanation of documentation • In addition to the evidence you provide, you must also include a detailed and thorough explanation of each piece of evidence. • This part of the project is as important, if not more so, than the evidence itself. Do not omit this step or your grade will suffer severely. • You must include an explanation for every piece of evidence, not just one at the end. Every piece of evidence should be thoroughly explained.
Explanation of documentation • Your explanation must be at least and no less than five sentences and must include the following: • Discussion of the specific effort the evidence represents • What did you do and how does this documentation represent that effort? • Explain what the effort resulted in • What effect did this effort have? What happened as a result? • Connect the effort to the tipping point • Did this step relate to connectors, mavens, salesmen, or stickiness? How so? Were your results what you expected based on your reading? How does your effort connect to gladwell’s information?
Final results • before submitting this final project, it is important that you take the time to review your efforts, their results, and the overall success or failure of the epidemic. • This reflection should, as always, be detailed and complete and must answer the following questions: • Do you feel like the epidemic reached a tipping point? Why or why not? • Was your prediction made in the intro correct? How so? If not, where did you go wrong? • Did you do everything you could to make this epidemic spread? Review what you did do and explain what more you could have done. • Why do you think the epidemic was successful? Or why do you think it was not successful? Remember to relate your response back to gladwell’s points.
Organization and presentation • How you choose to compile your information and documentation is up to you. It must be unique and well put together. Messy, unorganized work will not be accepted. • This is a major project and should be treated as such. Work should be clean, typed when possible, and visually appealing. • You will get out of the project what you put in.
Format options • Ideas for format include the following: • Scrapbook • Journal/logbook • Poster • Flow map • Powerpoint/prezi • Media or video project (with script) • Narrated picture show (with script) • See me for approval of other ideas-this is meant to be creative, so think outside of the box!!
Extra credit option • As we will not be completing the book in class, those of you who choose to obtain a copy of the book and finish reading, may earn extra credit. • The extra credit is not simply for reading the remainder of the book. You must also demonstrate the knowledge you gained from the reading to your effort in the epidemic challenge.
Extra credit requirements • To qualify for the extra credit, You must do the following: • Include 2 additional pieces of documentation and explanations • Must relate to the power of Context (chapters 4 and 5) • Include a flow map detailing how Airwalks reached their tipping point • Make sure to identify how the law of the few, the stickiness factor, and the power of context worked to help tip this epidemic either in a frame of reference or in a 5 sentence or more explanation • Include a flow map detailing how teen suicide reached a tipping point • Make sure to identify how the law of the few, the stickiness factor, and the power of context worked to help tip this epidemic either in a frame of reference or in a 5 sentence or more explanation
More extra credit info • If you choose to include a Frame of reference instead of an explanation for your flow maps, be sure to include a key identifying what each color represents. • The extra credit items should be included in the final project, so if you plan to take advantage of this opportunity, you will want to begin reading chapter 4 and beyond soon. • The extra credit is worth up to 100 extra credit points.
