  13. Practice coming about on the dock • You will practice skills on land that you will need to know on the water. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  14. Preparing the sail and mast for the Opti • You and your teammates will assemble the Opti sailboats before you go sailing. • This is a team effort. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  15. Working as a team • Teammates depend on one another to put the sailboats together properly and to help each other learn. • And when you finish sailing, you and your teammates will put the Opti sailboats safely away. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  16. Optimist launching at dockside • The moment has come as you anticipate your first day sailing an Optimist sailboat. • These Optimist sailboats were actually built by members of the Osprey Yacht Club here at Albemarle Planation. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  17. Getting ready to sail • Safety chase boats line up with the Opti Sailboats in preparation to tow the sailboats into Yeopim Creek. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  18. Towing the Opti out to the creek • Each Opti is towed out to Yeopim Creek to start sailing each day. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  19. Starting to sail with instructors close by • Your instructors, who are experienced sailors, are always close by. • They will help you learn to sail. • Safety is the first priority. • Having fun is the second priority. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  20. Sailing the Opti by yourself! • Now you are sailing an Opti sailboat by yourself with the safety chase boat nearby. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  21. Safety chase boat with instructors • Experienced sailors will guide and instruct you each day. • You are never alone. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  22. When you’re not sailing you’re observing • While your teammates are under sail, you will be observing in the observation boat. • An instructor will help you learn by watching your fellow sailors practice on the water. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  23. Fun on the water • You can learn by watching your fellow teammates sail by. • We will all make mistakes and we will learn from these mistakes making us better sailors each day. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  24. Nautical Terms to Learn • Backing Out of Irons:When my sailboat is “in irons” I will use this technique to get out of irons. • Bow:The front of the sailboat. • Coming About:Changing directions while sailing and changing my position in the sailboat. • Falling Off: Pull the tiller in toward me, pointing away from the wind, and fill the sail with wind. • Heading Up: I push tiller away from me, pointing the Opti toward the wind. • In Irons:This is when my sailboat is dead into the wind and it will not go forward. • Jibing: Turning my sailboat while “sailing down wind”; I can control this by pulling in the mainsheet  before I turn. • Pull in or let out the mainsheet:This is how I get power from the wind or reduce the power of the wind. • Push or pull the tiller: This is how I steer the sailboat. • Port:The left side of the sailboat when I am facing forward toward the Bow. • Tacking:Turning from one tack to the other tack again and again to “sail up wind” until I get to my destination. • Target: Pick a landmark or object to aim for to help you keep the sailboat on course. • Sailing Upwind:This is when I point my sailboat as close to the wind as possible. • Sailing Downwind:This is when I sail away from the wind and the wind is coming from the stern of the sailboat. • Starboard: The right side of the sailboat when I am facing forward toward the Bow. • Seamanship: My knowledge and skill pertaining to the navigation, safety, and maintenance of a ship. • Stern: The back of the sailboat 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  25. Parts of an Optimist Sailboat • Each side of a boat has a specific name. • The Bow is the front of the boat. • The Stern is the back of the boat. • The Starboard is the right side of the boat when you are facing forward. • The Port is left side of the boat when you are facing forward. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  26. Nomenclature (Parts of the sailboat) • Optimist sailboats have lots of parts and you will learn what they are called. • Sailors have a language of their own and you need to learn it. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  27. Points of sail • You will learn one very important thing about sailing. • YOU CANNOT SAIL DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND! • But you can sail “up wind” by tacking. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  28. Sailing into to the wind, one must tack • YOU CANNOT SAIL DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND! • To sail toward the direction of the wind or “up wind,” you must tack. • Tacking is sailing a close angle toward the wind but not directly into the wind. • You must keep changing direction until you get to your target. • The dagger board keeps the Opti from slipping sideways. • If you find yourself directly into the wind you will be in Irons and unable to move. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  29. Coming about • To tack, one must turn into and through the wind by coming about. • You will learn to change sides and how to come about. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  30. Points of sail • < Close Hauled, sailing close to the wind. Keep the boom and the sail in the center of boat. • This is how you sail up wind. • Remember: YOU CANNOT SAIL DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND! 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  31. Sailing close hauled, into the wind • Close Hauled. • The boom and the sail are in the center of the boat, sailing close to the wind. • YOU CANNOT SAIL DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND! 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  32. Points of sail • On a starboard tack, the wind comes over the starboard side of the boat. • On a port tack, the wind comes over the port side of the boat. < On a BeamReach or BroadReach you let the boom and the sail out about half way. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  33. Broad or beam reach • On a BeamReach or BroadReach you let the boom and the sail out about half way. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  34. Points of sail < Running down wind, let the boom and the sail all the way out. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  35. Running, sailing down wind • Running, sailing “down wind,” you let the boomand the sail all the way out. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  36. Backing up to change direction • YOU CANNOT SAIL DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND! • You are in “Irons” when your boat stops going forward because you are too close to the direction of the wind. To back the boat up: • Pull on the boom toward you; • Push on the tiller away from you; • The wind fills the sail and you begin to move forward again. 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  37. Back wind when in irons • You are in “Irons” when your boat stops going forward because you are too close to the wind. To back the boat up: • Pull on the boom; • Push on the tiller; • The wind fills the sail and you begin to move forward again. • YOU CANNOT SAIL DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND! 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  38. Sailors and instructors • The goal is to have fun learning how to safely sail a sailboat. • Do you see any unhappy faces here? 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  39. Are we having fun yet? 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation

  40. This is not THE END! • Itis just the BEGINNING! 2018 OYC Optimist Sailboat Youth Training Power Point Presentation
