Titanic Journals. Why, how, where, when?. Purpose. Creating a journal, which is historical fiction, allows the writer to understand the perspective of another. Journals provide practice with writing in first person. Students are able to show creativity and ability well through a journal.

  1. Titanic Journals Why, how, where, when?

Purpose • Creating a journal, which is historical fiction, allows the writer to understand the perspective of another. • Journals provide practice with writing in first person. • Students are able to show creativity and ability well through a journal. • If a student can write a journal from another perspective, he or she is understanding the history of the events experienced. • It is just fun!

Basic Requirements • Regular classes: 5 5 5 • Accelerated: 10 10 10 • These numbers refer to how many journal entries must be made before, during and after Titanic trip. • Journal entries can be any length, but remember: • Write enough so that I know you truly understand • Show your effort through how well you write the entries • Share what you learned through the entries

Basic Requirements • Pages must be distressed to look aged. • This will be done in class Thursday OR you may choose to do this at home, but you will still have to show the pages are ready on Thursday. • Journal pages must be hand written or typed (to look like handwriting) BEFORE distressing. • Journals may take any form you wish. • Full page size / half page size / odd shaped pages • Cover is required, and can be made or purchased • Pages must be bound…I will explain

Basic Requirements • Mementos may be added, but not required. • Little artifacts are great additions to your journal. • These make the reading very interesting…pictures! • Think ‘scrapbook.’ • Edges • You may burn the edges of your journal at home. • WITH PARENTAL PERMISSION • Do not burn off any words…careful.

  6. Hints… • Make sure the reader can decipher your handwriting. • Make each entry its own page. • Creativity really makes someone want to read! • This should be fun…not a chore. • In 1912, people wrote a lot, since there were no TVs, computers, video games, telephones, internet, radio, CDs, DVDs, etc. • BE the person…get into him or her in your head.

  7. Turning it in • Journals are due on Monday at the END of class. • We will bind together in class if needed. • If yours is ready Monday, I will have an extra credit assignment you will work on while we bind. • Journals must be dry, and not scented. • I will explain this one. • You may turn it in before school if it is too difficult to carry with you throughout the day. • We will move on beginning Tuesday. If you do not finish, you are on your own.
