  6. Edo • bay-door • former name of Tokyo • Location of the Tokugawa Shogunate 1603 to 1868 • Largest city in the world of that time • "floating world" – idealized mythical city • (based on visual art styles of artists like Hiroshige – 36 Views of Mt. Fuji)

Tokugawa Bakufu • Kyoto remained formal capital • Edo was the true functioning capital • 1,000,000 residents by 1721 • Repeatedly destroyed by fires • Between 1600 and 1945, leveled every 25–50 years • Fire • Earthquakes • Tsunami • volcanic eruptions • war •  1868 – Renamed Tokyo; “eastern capital“ 東 – east 京 – capital • Emperor moved residence to Tokyo (Meiji Restoration)

Geography • Arranged as a town around Edo castle • area surrounding the castle consisted largely of daimyō mansions • daimyo’s families lived in Edo year-round • sankin kōtai – system in which the wives and daughters of the daimyō lived in Edo instead of their native town; ensured loyalty to the Shogun • daimyō made journeys in alternating years to Edo and home towns they controlled • samurai (noble warrior class) population defined character of Edo • Kyoto's character was dominated by the Imperial Court, the court nobles, its numerous Buddhist temples, and its traditional heritage and identity • Osaka was the country's commercial center, dominated by the commoner merchant class.
