  2. Can you think of an area of the city of Toronto which portrays the characteristics of a particular culture or nationality?

Photo Analysis Activity • Analyze the following photographs • Fill out your graphic organizer to record what you observe • With your group, attempt to categorize the photos according to some meaningful criteria that your group decides • Once you’ve categorized the groups, attempt to link each category of photos to an area on Earth.

  4. Photo Activity Debrief • How did you categorize your photos? What did you look for in determining which category a photo belongs to? • Why is it impossible to pinpoint the exact location of the photos? • What is meant by a “region”?

  5. Regions • Regions are areas or segments of the Earth’s surface defined by a particular characteristic or set of characteristics • Regions can be either: • Homogeneous: common characteristics throughout its whole area • Functional: an area defined by a specific function or activity • Can you think of an example of each?

  6. Scale of Regions • Macro Scale (large area) • Micro Scale (small area)
