Why Studies Say that you Shouldn’t Make Your Bed

Leaving your bed unmade will give your sheets, wool mattress topper, your reversible wool underlay and your doona time to cool. The moisture that’s in your sheets will also evaporate, which means that you’ll be taking away the two things that dust mites love most about your bed. View this presentation for more information.

  1. Why Studies Say that you Shouldn’t Make Your Bed If you’re like most Australians, chances are that, if you think hard enough, you can remember your mum shouting “don’t leave that room until you make your bed!” before school every morning. Making one’s bed is something that is drilled into our heads as youngsters and it’s become a norm in our morning routine. So much so that 78% of Australians don’t leave their room in the morning until they’ve got their wool mattress topper and doona tidied and their pillows fluffed. If you fall into that category but you’d rather go about your day without having to worry about making sure your reversible wool underlay has been rotated, we have some good news for you. A group of scientists have said that you shouldn’t be making your bed in the morning. Yes; despite what we’re thought, they claim that you SHOULDN’T make your bed! Here’s why; Dust mites These tiny little creatures are distant cousins of our dreaded friend, the spider, and they live in the folds of your bedding. Studies have shown that, on average, one bed is home to about 1.5 million dust mites. They thrive in warm, moist environments so, by making your bed, you’re essentially tucking these little creatures in to reproduce whilst you go about your day. Leaving your bed unmade will give your sheets, wool mattress topper, your reversible wool underlay and your doona time to cool. The moisture that’s in your sheets will also evaporate, which means that you’ll be taking away the two things that dust mites love most about your bed. You’ll get more sleep If you’re the kind of person who likes to take a nap during the day, you’re not going to want to remove all of the cushions, take off the bed runner and pull out your doona from under the mattress just so you can get some quick shut-eye. Getting into bed will be much easier when you just have to jump in and wrap yourself up in your comfy bedding. It can be good for your health The atmosphere that you create in your home can have a huge effect on your overall health and well-being. We all somewhere where we feel safe, comfortable, happy and at home.

  2. But, with so many people striving to have a picture-perfect bed that looks like something from a magazine, the bedroom can easily become a place that doesn’t have that homely vibe. You can ensure that your bedroom feels ‘lived in’ by making it less pristine-looking. And, you guessed it, keeping your bed unmade is one of the best ways to get that vibe! You’ll be more productive Studies show that it can take anything from 30 seconds to 4 minutes to make a bed. The time it takes you depends on two main factors; 1.How much bedding you have 2.How tidy you are If your time is tipping the latter end of the scale, the 4 minutes that you spend making your bed can be spent having breakfast, meditating, brushing your teeth or doing something else that will get your day started off on a productive note. So, with all of the above evidence pointing towards a world where bed making isn’t necessary, are you going to change your morning routine?
