  2. Who am I? • My name is Megan Burns • -three children • BsED in Foreign Language Ed – German, UGA • ESOL Certificate, UGA • Masters in Ed Leadership, GSU • 8th year of teaching at Norcross • 15th year of teaching

  3. Whatwill my child learn this year? • Reading Strategies including: • Visualization • Prediction • Connecting • Using the Reading Horizons Computer Program • LDC IV: • Graduation Writing Test Preparation • Literature Studies • Grammar • Increasing Vocabulary

  4. How will you assess what my child has learned? • Unit essential questions • Unit tests & quizzes • Sample Writing Prompts • Homework/Classwork • Participation in class lecture/discussion • Collaborative group activities

  5. How will my child’s grade be calculated? • Minor Assessments (quizzes)—20% • Major Assessments (tests & projects)—30% • Class work/Daily work—25% • Homework—5% • Performance Exam—5% • Semester Final—15%

  6. How can I keep track of my child’s progress? • Sign up for Gwinnett Parent Portal • Electronic progress reports emailed on or around the 1st and 15th of each month, beginning 9/1/10 • Convey concerns via e-mail or by phone • Schedule a parent/teacher conference

  7. Need-to-knowClass Policies • HW must be completed on time to receive full credit. Work that is 1 day – 1 week late will receive no higher than a 70%. After 1 week, the late work percentage drops to a 50%. • Students may have an organized 3-ring binder or a spiral notebook in class EVERYDAY! Help your child organize! • The student is responsible for making up work missed due to absence whether excused or unexcused by checking class website and class calendar. • Help is ALWAYS available if you ask for it! • Voluntary Tutoring – TAKE ADVANTAGE!
