  2. The Public Presidency • Public opinion can be an important resource for presidential persuasion. • The necessity of public support leads the White House to employ public relations techniques similar to those used to market products.

  3. Head of Government • Executive authority • All of the executive duties outlined in the Constitution and powers to the president in implementing policy

  4. Head of State • Ceremonial activities give presidents an important symbolic aura and great deal of favorable press coverage, continuing to their efforts to build public support • Wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier • Welcoming dignitaries from other countries • Participating in charitable events • The Kennedy Honors

  5. Presidential Approval • Approval is the product of many factors: • Many people are predisposed to support the president through party affiliation • Changes in approval levels appear to be due primarily to the public’s evaluation of how the president is handling policy.

  6. The President and the Press • Important aspect of the president’s efforts to lead public opinion. • Press secretaries and their staffs arrange private interviews with White House officials, photo opportunities and travel arrangements for reporters when the president leaves Washington. • The president’s press secretary conducts daily press briefings, giving prepared announcements and answering questions.

  7. Bias in the Media • Some believe that the news coverage of the presidency often tends to emphasize the negative. • One could also argue that the press is inherently biased toward the White House.
