2. Introduction Gerontology Institute was founded in 1958.

Hospice Sue Ryder Care Skopje was established in 1998;
Hospice Sue Ryder Care Bitola was established in 2005.
Department Mother Tereza- home for the elderly people
Hospice Sue Ryder Care Skopje, is based in the capital city Skopje.
Hospice Sue Ryder Bitola is based in the city of Bitola.
All institutions are serving patients from the entire territory of Republic of Macedonia

Total number of employees in the Gerontology Institute is 241 persons, and number of volunteers is 50 persons. Administrative staff is consisted from 26 staff members, others are medical staff.
Department of Geriatrics has 118 staff members.
Hospice Sue Ryder Skopje has 37 staff members.

Hospice Sue Ryder Bitola has 35 staff members

10. Introduction - continued How many beneficiaries:
Hospice Sue Ryder Care Skopje has served total of 2851 patients from its opening, from which:
- 2213 patients were admitted for in-hospital treatment ,
- 106 patients visited the out-patient ward of the hospice,
- 532 patients were treated at home by the service for Domiciliary palliative care.
Hospice Sue Ryder Care Bitola has served 1353 patients admitted for in-hospital treatment

The Hospice Sue Ryder - Skopje offers the following services from the palliative care:
In hospital care in the hospice with capacity of 75 beds.
Domiciliary palliative care, through the specialized unit.
Out patient care capacity: 6 beds
The Hospice Sue Ryder Bitola offers in-hospital palliative care with capacity of 72 beds.
Number of current projects: Establishment of Alzheimer Centre
Main Donors:
The Gerontology Institute is Public health institution, thus the main funds for its operation are from the State health budget, obtained through the Health insurance fund and the Ministry of health.

Conference for palliative care, with training for doctors and nurses (Ohrid, 2004).
Training for palliative care conducted by Ms. Helen Cleis (Great Britain) and Dr. Vesna Velic Stefanovska, MD PhD (Medical faculty Skopje), (Skopje, 2005).

30. Fundraising Fundraising is a new concept in Republic of Macedonia,
and is not very well developed.
We are currently working on a plan to develop the fundraising
The general economic crisis represents an obstacle for the development of the fundraising.
31. Sue Ryder Family cooperation Gerontology Institute is interested very much for cooperation with Sue Ryder Foundation Family, mostly for education and exchange of experience
32. What next 1? In the coming years the need for palliative treatment and care will gradually increase in Macedonia.
The statistics from the hospices shows that there is a growing need among the population for palliative in-hospital care and domiciliary care of the terminally ill patients.
The experience from the hospices show that for the proper care and treatment of these patients multidisciplinary teams are needed, trained for palliative medicine and palliative care.
In year 2010 the Government has adopted the National strategy for palliative care
The Action plan in accordance with the National strategy is currently being prepared.
Development of a Strategy for social inclusion of elderly in Macedonia.
Development of a Program for combating violence against elder people
33. What next 2 ? Future project: Establishment of Alzheimer centre
Development of a centre for care of the patients with Alzheimers disease, with capacity of 100 beds
Beneficiaries: People suffering from Alzheimer and their family members.
Donors: Main donor is the Government.
Currently we are seeking for an investment partner
34. What next 3 ? Establishment of a new Department for care of elderly people, aimed for elder people that need care. Joint project with American College Skopje.
There is a need for information of the general population and medical staff from the primary, secondary and tertiary health care, regarding the services offered and the referral to our Institute.
35. Other Important Business Gerontology Institute is the only Public health institutions that posses certificates for ISO 9001:2000 standard.
The Institute posses certificate for HACCP standard.
In 2009 the Institute has been awarded with Hospital of the year award for investments from own funds, by the Ministry of health.
The Institute is the only educational unit for Geriatric and Palliative medicine in Macedonia, serving the students from the Medical faculty - Skopje
