  1. Orangutans Presented by Group 6: Lee Dan, Claudia, Yi Zhan, Wei Chuan

  2. Problem • Orangutans are losing their habitat due to deforestation

  3. Causes of deforestation • Forest Fires • Caused by draining of water for farming • Mining • Coal • Gold • People bribed the police with money • Who patrol the grounds that can be used for logging • Since the police were poor, they will accept it

  4. Local’s attitude: “If I don’t take the wood, someone else would.” • Poverty • Need for money to buy food/land to grow food • Log illegally to get it • Government gave concessions to companies • Locals are jealous • Resulting in illegal logging • Palm oil plantations • Companies choose primary rainforests • Able to sell timber while waiting for palm oil to grow

  5. Consequences • Water pollution • Mercury • Mining for gold • Air pollution • Lung disease • Flooding • Soil erosion • Loss of biodiversity • Degraded land • More poverty This IS really in Indonesia!

  6. Consequences (If do nothing) • No more income from forests (for locals) • More of • Flooding • Air pollution • Water pollution • Soil erosion • Even less biodiversity • Overfishing

  7. Possible solutions • Limit logging • Prosecute big companies • Law enforcement • Proper land management • Preserve nature • Encourage palm oil companies to use degraded land as opposed to primary rainforests to give farmers incentives • Provide education • To raise awareness • So locals have proper jobs

  8. Final Solution • We (rather, I) have decided on Education as the best solution • Education can • Help them find a proper job to earn money • And not log instead • Raise awareness • Disadvantages: • They may not listen • There may still be a demand for jobs because with so many jobless, there must be enough jobs for them

  9. Sources • Video that Mr Joshua showed us • Google images

  10. Thank you! • Note that most credit goes out to Claudia as I made this up while the others do nothing
