  2. Which countries were involved? • North America, South Vietnam, France, along with South Korea, fighting in support of democratic government. However, France pulled out of the war after a period of time. • Russia, China, and Northern Vietnam alied for communist government.

  3. What were the causes of this war? • Parts of Vietnam were formerly part of a French colony. Post WWII, France wanted to reclaim the land after Japan’s surrender. However, A communist supported army called the Vietminh opposed against France. • Democratic supporters regrouped at southern Vietnam. U.S backed up Anti-communist government and sent military advisors to help train troops.

  4. Goals and objectives of the superpowers • The goal of the United states was primarily to defend South Vietnam and prevent it from being conquered by Communist North. • Communist goals were to reunify Vietnam as a communist covernment. They eventually succeed.

  5. Results • An estimate of 58,000 Americans have died during the war. Between 365,000 and 587,000 civilians’ lives have also been taken during the war. Overall, Approximately 5.7 million people died in the war, 7 million+ total casualties.

  6. Present Day Vietnam • Recovered gradually over a period of time. Modern day buildings are being continued to be built over old and slum housings. Transportation and communication is building and improving daily. • Even though it is still a communist government, tensions have dwindled down and America is free to trade with Vietnam and accepting tourists to travel in Vietnam.

  7. Was it better as is? • Vietnam war sparked many controversies worldwide. Most individuals were non supportive and against the Vietnam war. • It had not obtain any popular support, as members from many families served and/or died from the war. • Loss of American troops, large amount of innocent civilian deaths. Large amounts of resources and money wasted on war. Many grievances and family loss during war. A scar in American and Vietnam history. • Overall, a mistake of The United States and an unnecessary war that could have, and should have been avoided.
