Federal Legislative Activities • HR 1215 Green Chemistry Research and Development Act of 2005 Sponsor:  Gingrey (R-GA) • S 12170 (Sponsor: Snowe (R-ME)) – thisversion of the bill is still before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. • With current events, unlikely that either will pass soon

Details of bills • Green chemistry defined as “chemistry and chemical engineering to design chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances while producing high quality products through safe and efficient manufacturing processes” • The President shall establish • Green Chemistry Research and Development Program • Interagency Working Group

  5. Other Elements of Bills • Manufacturing Extension Center Green Suppliers Network Grant Program • Undergraduate Education In Chemistry And Chemical Engineering • Study On Commercialization Of Green Chemistry • Partnerships In Green Chemistry

  6. Appropriations! • NSF - $7M, $7.5 M, $8M (2006 - 2008) • NIST - $5M, $5.5M, $6M (2006-2008) • DOE - $7M, $7.5 M, $8M (2006 - 2008) • EPA - $7M, $7.5 M, $8M (2006 - 2008) • Total: $26M, $28M, $30M • These are not new budget items but rather direction on how their budgets are to be spent

  7. Regional Activities • New England Green Chemistry Consortium (NEGCC) • Collaborative research activities between land grant university systems in New England (VT, CT, ME, NH, MA, RI) • Industrial partners include Dow, DuPont, International Paper, etc. • Focus includes GC educational tools and policy work to enhance promotion of GC in the region

  8. TURI Activities • Quarterly meetings with industry, academia and government to keep abreast of green chemistry innovations in Massachusetts • Meetings planned for October, February, April and June
