What are the changes from the last revision? • The list and definitions of VE remain the same • In the P&R for a Vital Statistics System- Rev 2, the uses of VS obtained from different sources were not organized for easy reading and reference. • Proposal: a section on uses of vital statistics • structured by the different uses of vital statistics • providing elaborated and comprehensive explanations on the uses of VS • 4/10

  5. Definition of vital statistics Vital statistics is defined as a collection of statistics on vital events in a lifetime of a person as well as relevant characteristics of the events themselves and of the person and persons concerned. 5/10

Vital events • For vital statistics purpose, the vital events of interest are: • live births, adoptions, legitimations, recognitions; • deaths and foetal deaths; and • marriages, divorces, separations and annulments of marriage.   7. Definitions of vital events • The recommended definitions of each vital event on which data are to be collected for vital statistics purposes are as given in para 57 of the Principles and Recommendations for a Vital Statistics System, Revision 2 • 7/10

Uses of vital statistics • The paper provides an annotated outline of the various uses of vital statistics irrespective of sources (records of vital events from civil registration; specific retrospective questions on fertility and mortality in population censuses and household sample surveys; vital records from sample registration) • 8/10
