  2. WHAT IS A PHR? • PHR are human remains that have been preserved, by accident or on purpose. • By human remains we mean; skeletons as well as additions: skin, hair, organs, clothes, artefacts etc

  8. HOW ARE PRH MADE? A PHR is created when a body was put in a place where no air or moisture could get to it. Lack of air and moisture delays the decaying process and mummifies the body.

  9. MAKING PHR ON PURPOSE • The two most famous ways of creating PHR on purpose are: • MUMMIFICATION • FREEZING

  10. MUMMIFICATION • Is the oldest way to preserve humans and other living things. • The most famous “mummies” come from Ancient Egypt. • Some of these mummies are:

  13. MUMMIFICATION • The mummification process used by the Egyptians lasted for 90 days. The steps were as follows: 1. Embalming 2. Removal of Brain 3. Removal of Internal Organs 4. Drying Out Process 5. Wrapping of the Body 6. Final Procession

  14. CRYOGENIC FREEZING • The is a relatively new process where a body is frozen in the hope of reviving it in the future. • Your body is frozen using liquid nitrogen at stored at –220 degrees C • The only drawback is that it doesn’t actually work yet!!

  15. OTHER MODERN PHR • There are other people around the world who have had their bodies frozen. Some of these are famous politicians whose bodies are on display in important locations around the world. • Some of these people include:

  21. THIS UNIT • This unit we are going to look at PHR from around the world. • We are first going to look closely at the ICEMAN – where he was found, when, how, by who etc. • We are then going to widen our study with individual looks at different mummies from all over the place.
