  1. The Science of Biology Remember to wait for the vocabulary word to pop up! Can you guess it before it comes up? **Indicates Bonus (and important) Vocabulary! PB 20 09

  2. Science Organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world

  3. Observation Process of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way

  4. Hypothesis Possible explanation for a set of observations or possible answer to a scientific question

  5. Inference **Idea based on what is already known

  6. Controlled Experiment Experiment in which only one variable is changed 1

  7. Control Group Group in an experiment that is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for one independent variable

  8. Independent Variable **Factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes

  9. Dependent Variable **Factor in an experiment that a scientist wants to observe, which may change in response to the manipulated variable

  10. Data Evidence; information gathered from observations

  11. Theory Well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations and hypotheses and enables scientists to make accurate predictions about new situations

  12. Bias Particular preference or point of view that is personal, rather than scientific Scientific

  13. Biology Scientific study of life

  14. Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Genetic material that organisms inherit from their parents

  15. Stimulus signal to which an organism responds

  16. 2 2 Sexual Reproduction **Process by which two cells from different parents unite to produce the first cell of a new organism 2

  17. 2 2 Asexual Reproduction **Process by which a single parent reproduces by itself A = 1

  18. Homeostasis Relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain

  19. Metabolism The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials

  20. Evolve **Change over time

  21. Biosphere Part of the Earth in which life exists including land, water, and air or atmosphere

  22. Metric System **Decimal system of measurement based on certain physical standards and scaled on multiples of 10 deca - 10 hecto - 100 kilo - 1000 deci—.1 centi—.01 milli—.001
