  1. Battle of Trenton General George Washington had spent the fall of 1776 being chased from New York and New Jersey in a series of stunning defeats. In December, Washington crossed the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. The American troops were demoralized and most of the soldier’s enlistments would come to an end in January. Washington knew that the army needed a victory if America was to continue the fight.

  2. The Surprise Attack • General Washington decided to cross the Delaware River back into New Jersey so he could attack the British forces which were made up of German mercenaries at Trenton. • Washington and his troops made the treacherous crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Night, 1776. • The Germans were entirely surprised and unprepared for an attack. • The Americans won a resounding victory with very few casualties.

  3. Importance of Trenton Victory • This victory was an American first. Many people were losing faith in Washington’s command. It was necessary that he be able to show results. • The Trenton victory ensured that most of Washington’s men reenlisted. • It gave hope to an army who was struggling with very little. Many of the soldiers made the Delaware crossing without adequate clothing or shoes.
