  3. WHAT IS A TOPIC SENTENCE? • IT IS THE FIRST SENTENCE OF YOUR BODY PARAGRAPHS IN YOUR ESSAY. • IT IS THE FIRST SENTENCE OF ANY PARAGRAPH WHERE YOU ARE STICKING TO THE SAME IDEA.

  4. HOW DO I DEVELOP A TOPIC SENTENCE? • WRITE DOWN YOUR THESIS STATEMENT. • EXAMPLE: The American Dream exists because every person has the opportunity to get an education, work, and become a success. • THINK OF THE “SUBTOPICS” THAT EXIST IN YOUR THESIS STATEMENT. • Body 1: Education • Body 2: Work • Body 3: Success ***LOOK AT YOUR THESIS STATEMENT RIGHT NOW AND DO WHAT I JUST DID!

  5. TAKING THE IDEA AND TURNING IT INTO A SENTENCE • BODY 1 (MAJOR IDEA = EDUCATION) • In America, every person regardless of citizenship is allowed access to a free and public education. • OR • In “The Right to Fail,” the author states that higher education exists in our country for all to access. • WHICH ONE IS STRONGER? WHICH ONE ACTS AS MORE OF AN OVERVIEW

  6. YOUR TURN… • ON YOUR DO NOW SHEET, TAKE 3 MINUTES TO WRITE DOWN THE THREE “SUBTOPICS” UNDER YOUR THESIS. ALSO, WRITE THEM DOWN IN YOUR PACKET. • YOU ARE GOING TO HAND THE LOOSELEAF PAPER INTO ME. • CONTINUE BUILDING THE SUPPORTING DETAILS FOR YOUR BODY PARAGRAHS—NOW YOU HAVE THE OUTLINE TO BUILD YOUR TOPIC SENTENCES AND THE REST OF YOUR ESSAY 

  7. RECAP • THINK OF YOUR ESSAY AS A HOUSE. • THE FOUNDATION IS THE THESIS STATEMENT. • THE LAYERS ON TOP ARE YOUR BODY PARAGRAPHS. • IF YOU BUILD IT CORRECTLY, THE ROOF (YOUR CONCLUSION) WILL MAKE IT FEEL COZY, WARM, AND UNIFIED. CONCLUSION BODY THESIS
