  1. Microscopes & You Microscopes in Depth Fall 2017

  2. Microscopes What we use! • Magnifies organisms • Types: • Light Microscopes • Electron Microscopes • MUCH higher magnification • Most powerful! • Scanning (SEM) & Transmission (TEM) • Magnification – increase in apparent size • Resolution –helps with clarity

  3. Diaphragm Base Always carry a microscope with one hand holding the arm and one hand under the base. Ocular lens(Eyepiece) Body Tube Nosepiece Arm Objectives Stage Stage Clips Coarse Adjustment Fine Adjustment Light

  4. Structures & Function

  5. Structures & Function Pt. 2

  6. CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING! • What knob would you use to enhance magnification? • What knob would you use to enhance resolution? COARSE ADJUSTMENT KNOB FINE ADJUSTMENT KNOB

  7. Comparing Powers of Magnification • We can see better details with higher the powers of magnification, but we cannot see as much of the image. • Which of these images would be viewed at a higher power of magnification?

  8. Calculating Magnification • Eyepiece = 10x • Objective • Scanning = 4x (shortest in length) • Low Power = 10x • High Power = 40x (longest) • Magnification = EyepiecexObjective • Field of view measured in microns KNOW PARTS OF MICROSCOPE AND WHAT THEY DO!!

  9. 40x 100x 400x
