Issues in employability in Psychology 15-20% of UK Psychology graduates enter professional Psychology (QAA, 2010); DLHE data – high proportion of UK Psychology graduates not employed in graduate level jobs 6 months after graduation (relative to other disciplines). What do your Psychology students want to do when they graduate? What do you do to prepare them?

Skills: how and where? • Analysis of scientific reports in the media (UEL, Sussex); • Research methodology and related skills (Stirling); • Independent learning and final year projects (everyone!); • Psychology in the workplace (GCU, Huddersfield); • Internationalisation (Liverpool); • Ethics and professional values (everyone!);

Knowledge – the UK curriculum Research Methods and Statistics + Project Social Psychology Cognitive Psychology Biological Psychology Developmental Psychology Individual Differences CHIP + Applied and specialist areas – health, clinical, educational, sport, organisational etc, usually as options.

  6. Opportunities from the new BPS accreditation criteria Consideration of first year curriculum; Depth, breadth and progression; Not independently and separately assessed core areas; Increased flexibility and opportunities for integration of areas and space for extra activities such as placements, study abroad, etc.

To what extent can psychological literacy underpin your employability work? • Thinking about one area of Psychology in which you specialise and teach most: • What are the possible employability benefits for students of knowing about your area of Psychology? • What skills do students develop when learning about this area? • Would integrating with other areas be useful? • Can you use assessment to measure employability and/or psychological literacy?
