  1. Chinese Exclusion Act 1882-1943 An act passed by the federal government that did not permit Chinese immigrants into the United States.

  2. Chinese Exclusion Act A United States federal law signed by President Chester A. Arthur on May 6, 1882. One of the most significant restrictions on free immigration in U.S. history, prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers. The act followed revisions made in 1880 to the U.S.-China Burlingame Treaty of 1868, revisions that allowed the U.S. to suspend Chinese immigration. The act was initially intended to last for 10 years, but was renewed in 1892 and made permanent in 1902. It was finally repealed by the Magnuson Act on December 17, 1943. Chinese population in 1882 = 0.002% of the U.S. Population

During this time many (how many?) immigrants came to America, however Chinese immigrants were not allowed with no specific reason or grievance. Many Americans at that time complained that the Chinese were taking their jobs, however the Chinese were a small fraction of the population, .002%. • Why is this topic/event/person important today? This issue could be related to discrimination and prejudices that some people still might have today. Looking back at history it is weird to think that Americans could talk about the U.S. being the land of opportunity and freedom when we did not allow a certain race/ethnicity into the country for no particular reason. • One of the most significant restrictions on free immigration in U.S. history, prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers.
