  5. The Exodus Story: God’s Holiness To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consumingfire on top of the mountain. Exodus 24:17 For the LORD your God is a consumingfire, a jealous God. Deuteronomy 4:24 The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: “Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?” Isaiah 33:14 …For our “God is a consumingfire.” Hebrews 12:29

We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.
