How depressed would you be if….(your life is worth 10 points, take away as many points from your life as you think this situation deserves) • you lost your possessions in a burglary • You got sacked from your job • Your house got burned down • Your wife/ husband left you • your brothers/ sisters all died in an earthquake • You got a horrible skin disease

  2. The Story of Job: Job’s “theodicy” Watch the video. What was Satan’s challenge to God ? To know the story of Job To explain how Job made sense of his suffering To reflect on whether Job and Aquinas provide a good explanation of suffering.

  3. Summarise the story of Job How Satan challenged God & what God allowed Satan to do Job 1:8-12 The things Satan caused Job to suffer – briefly mention some of them Job 1:13-18 Job’s reply Job 2:10 How Job started to “grumble” Job 3:20-26 **do you think Job was right to grumble the way he did? explain why.

  4. Job’s friends came to see him, and tried to make sense of his suffering. Draw a stick person version of each of Job’s 3 friends. Speech bubble a summary of what each of them is saying. How would you try and explain to Job why he is suffering? **Which of Job’s friends do you agree or disagree with? Explain why Bildad: “ God cannot be unjust, and God does not do evil - therefore God must be repaying you justly for your sins. “ Zophar: “Don’t worry. If you are innocent, your suffering will be soon over - and God will yetfill your mouth with laughter”. Eliphaz: You mock God when you say “I am sinless!” God is punishing you for this pride!

  5. You are all wrong! There is no reason to my suffering ! I certainly have not done anything to deserve it! Job cannot see any point to his suffering. Does that make his suffering easier or harder to bear?**Have you ever felt like Job does?

  6. God’s Answer God appeared to Job, showing Him His greatness, majesty and power in Creation, and replied: “I am God, and beyond your understanding. My ways are beyond your understanding. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Can you tell Me the secrets of existence? Are you as ancient, or as great as I? “ “As for you, Job’s friends, go to Job with gifts, and ask him to pray for you, for you spoke foolishly: but now Job has seen My greatness, and understood that innocent suffer, and this is a great mystery, beyond your ability to understand. Job answered the Lord: “I uttered what I did not understand, things I did not know. But now my eye sees you, I repent in dust and ashes, and will speak no more.” And God blessed Job twice as much as he had before, and blessed the end of his days more than his beginning. What is God saying? How does Job respond? Why were Job’s friends wrong? **What do you think about God’s answer to why we suffer?

  7. THEALMIGHTY Draw your own slogan, to show God’s answer to Job about the Problem of Evil.
