  2. Problem Statement • What are the various features of small animal digestion?

  3. Learning Objectives • Describe the two systems of digestion. • List and describe the parts of the ruminant digestive system. • List and describe the parts of the non-ruminant digestive system. • Describe the pathway that food takes in the ruminant and non-ruminant systems. • Describe the poultry digestive system.

  4. K.Q.#1: What is animal digestion? • It is the process of breaking down food material into their various nutrient forms that can be absorbed into the animal’s bloodstream.

  5. K.Q. #2: What are the two digestive systems of small animals? • Ruminant- Forage consuming or multi-stomach animals. • Non-Ruminant- Single-stomached or mongastric animals.

  6. K.Q. #3: What are the various parts of the ruminant digestive system? • Rumen- Largest compartment of the digestive system 80% of digestive capacity. • Reticulum- “Honeycomb” Works with the rumen in formation of the cud for regurgitation. Foreign bodies such as nails are kept here.

  7. K.Q.#3: • Omasum- Mad up of many layers of strong muscular tissues. The function of this third compartment is to remove large amounts of water from food as it moves from the rumen to the fourth compartment. • Abomasum- Is referred to as the “true stomach” because it functions very similarly to the stomach found in single-stomached animals.

  8. K.Q. #4: What process does the food follow through a ruminant animal? A. Food enters the mouth • Is chewed just enough to be swallowed. • The food enters the rumen. • This food in the rumen is worked upon by millions of bacteria and microorganisms. • These bacteria and microorganisms transform low-quality protein and some nitrogen compounds into essential amino acids.

  9. K.Q. #4: F. Food material not fully digested in the rumen is either regurgitated in the form of cud and is chewed and swallowed again or indigestible material is moved to the reticulum. G. What food is left has its water drained away by the third compartment (omasum) on its way to the abosamus. H. In the abomasum, the remaining food is either digested or excreted as fecal material.

  10. K.Q.#5: What are the parts of the non-ruminant digestive system? • Esophagus • Stomach • Small Intestine • Duodeum/Jelunum/LLeum of Small Int.. • Large Intestine

  11. K.Q. #6: What process does the food follow in the non-ruminant digestion system? • Food is ingested through the mouth and esophagus. • Food is then enters the stomach. • The stomach breaks down the food through muscular movement and digestive juices. • The digestive juices breakdown proteins, and fat into fatty acids and glycerol.

  12. K.Q. #6: • Food passes from the stomach to the small intestine, which is the primary site for the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. • Undigested food material passes from the small intestine into the large intestine. • The large intestine then absorbs water of the undigested material. • Finally, waste is excreted through the anus via the rectum.

  13. K.Q. #7: What are the various features of a Bird's digestive system? • Esophagus (Gullet) • Crop • Gall Bladder • Liver • Proventriculus or Gizzard • Ventriculus or Gizzard

  14. K.Q. #7 • Pancreas • Duodenal Loop • Small Intestine • Ceca • Large Intestine • Cloaca

  15. K.Q. #8: What process does the food follow in the digestion in poultry? • Food passes down the gullet into the crop. • The crop (an enlargement of the esophagus) serves primarily as storage where food is softened. • Food then passes into the ventriculus (gizzard) where grit is present or added to help break up the food. • Food passes on to the small intestine where food is broken down and digested or excreated out.
