  2. There are 100,000 Olympians living across all countries represented at ANOC Elite athletes are exposed to high training and competition loads and psychological pressure Much research focusses on the short-term consequences of injury but none have examined long-term health of elite athletes

  3. WOA Olympians Health Study Supported by IOC Medical & Scientific Commission research grant Understand and highlight the magnitude of health issues Identify risk factors Develop data led recommendations with stakeholders

  4. First ever global health study of Olympians 5,000+ responses 131 Olympic nations 56% male 44% female 100% of Olympic sports Age range 16-97

  5. Questions we want to answer How many Olympians are in pain or have restricted movement as a result of general wear and tear? What proportion of Olympians sustained an injury that still affects them? Are there any trends in the causes of these injury / pain issues? What is the current mental health status of Olympians? Looking back what would Olympians have done differently and what advise would they give to others?

  6. Analysis so far has focused on injury which is a major risk factor for long-term health issues Almost two thirds of Olympians reported sustaining at least one significant injury during their Olympic career. Of most concern is the knee. The majority of these injuries were sustained in training.

  7. Analysis of the data is ongoing Further analysis is being conducted by the professional research team to uncover more information about the prevalence of health issues and impact on Olympians bodies and minds. Sport specific data will be generated for some sports where there were the highest response rates. In March/April 2020 the first official paper from this study will be published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and will be presented at the IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport.

  8. Some Olympian health interventions already exist at a national level • Support from NOC / national team: • ongoing access to medical care for a period of time following retirement from elite competition • access to Olympic rehabilitation clinics • mentoring programmes to support wellbeing during transition • Gym / health club membership • Life-long private health care or insurance
