  1. ELLs and the Common Core The Six ELA Shifts and ELLs

  2. Six Instructional Shifts • There are six instructional shifts in the ELA Common Core Curriculum • Implementing the Common Core Curriculum for ELLs http://www.dsfconsulting.net/wp-content/uploads/RITELL_FINAL.pdf • Common Core Standards for ELLs http://www.colorincolorado.org/common-core/ell/

  3. SHIFT 1. Balancing Informational and Literary Text: • At least 50% of what students read is informational. • Strategies: (SIOP, Thinking Maps, Paired Readings) • Teaching Informational Text to ELLs http://blog.colorincolorado.org/2013/12/12/determining-how-much-background-knowledge-to-provide-for-ells/ • The Challenge of Challenging Text http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/mar12/vol69/num06/The-Challenge-of-Challenging-Text.aspx

  4. THINKING MAPS • Sometimes referred to as Mind Maps, Thinking Maps let you organize your thoughts and see all the possibilities in front of you. • Write your question down in the center of the paper and circle it. • Write down everything that comes into your head when you think of your topic. • Circle each new word or phrase that you write down, and draw a line to the word or phrase it came from.

  5. SHIFT 2. Building Knowledge in the Disciplines: • Content teachers emphasize literacy in their classrooms • Strategies: In-depth reading of short, content-support texts, structured note-taking and use of other graphic organizers for meaning-making • Planning for Close Reading http://www.shanahanonliteracy.com/2012/07/planning-for-close-reading.html • Determining How Much Background Knowledge to Provide ELLs http://blog.colorincolorado.org/2013/12/12/determining-how-much-background-knowledge-to-provide-for-ells/

  6. SHIFT 3. Staircase of Complexity: • Teachers provide appropriate and necessary scaffolding and supports • Strategies: Use complex texts, rigorous conversations, scaffolding strategies & techniques • Scaffolding for Content Area Teachers http://mail.clevelandcountyschools.org/~jefleisher/S034C9819.2/ModifyingContentInstruction.pdf http://curriculum.austinisd.org/RtI/strategies/documents/differentiation/Differentiation_Strategies.pdf http://www.edutopia.org/blog/scaffolding-lessons-six-strategies-rebecca-alber • ESL Curriculum Modules K-2 and Grade 5 http://www.esboces.org//site/Default.aspx?PageID=410

  7. SHIFT 4. Text-based Answers • Teachers insist that classroom experiences stay deeply connected to the text • Strategies: QAR, Question-Answer-Relationship, text chunking • Tackling Complex Texts With ELLs http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/nov13/vol71/num03/Tackling-Complex-Texts-with-Language-Learners.aspx • Using Storyboards to Inspire Close Reading http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/18/skills-practice-using-storyboards-to-inspire-close-reading/?_r=1

  8. QAR Explain Those Four QARs ! • Right There. The answer is in the text, and if we pointed at it, we'd say it's "right there!" Often, the answer will be in a single sentence or place in the text, and the words used to create the question are often also in that same place. • Think and Search. The answer is in the text, but you might have to look in several different sentences to find it. It is broken up or scattered or requires a grasp of multiple ideas across paragraphs or pages. • Author and You. The answer is not in the text, but you still need information that the author has given you, combined with what you already know, in order to respond to this type of question. • On My Own. The answer is not in the text, and in fact you don't even have to have read the text to be able to answer it.

  9. SHIFT 5.Writing from Sources • Writing needs to show use of evidence to inform or make an argument • Strategies: Sentence starters, outlines, graphic organizers, guided writing, modeling • Using Sentence Frames to Jump-start Writing https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/jumpstart-student-writing • Four Easy Steps to Common Core Writing http://sixtraitgurus.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/4-easy-steps-to-meeting-ccss-expectations-for-writing/ • Writing to Learn http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/feb12/vol69/num05/Writing-to-Learn.aspx • Redefining the Writing Process with iPads http://www.edutopia.org/blog/redefining-writing-process-with-ipads-beth-holland

  10. SHIFT 6. Academic Vocabulary • Students constantly build the vocabulary they need to access grade level complex text • Strategies: Pre-teach academic vocabulary & power words, explicit instruction in word learning strategies, teach language chunks, build on native-language knowledge • Scaffolding Academic Language http://www.mlmcc.com/docs/2010-03-TESOL-Scaffolding-HO.pdf • List of Academic Vocabulary by Grade Level and Spanish Version http://www.u-46.org/curriculum/dyncat.cfm?catid=1023
