    1. Lafayette School Corporation Babar Moghal (Team Leader) Omar Fouad Michael Chung Prabhjot Kaur John Beasley

    2. Weather Station Omar Fouad (Project Leader) Babar Moghal

    3. Fielded Project

    4. Second Phase Objectives Lightning Detector Design and construct lightning detector circuit Interface with a computer’s serial port Log each lightning strike’s date and time into a data file 1 minute interval minimum between strikes so 1 lightning strike isn’t counted more than once Network wide data capability (Website) Take weather software and lightning data files and post information on website Graph and Plot Data using Excel

    5. Lightning Detector

    6. A snapshot of the circuit

    7. Where are we now We have gathered all the parts and components and built a prototype circuit We are currently testing and debugging the circuit We have a plan to finish by semester end

    8. Gantt Chart

    10. Where we are going We have to continue further testing and check for the correct output With the completed circuit we will interface with a computer’s serial port A data file will be made with the date and time of each lightning strike

    11. Where we are going Website will post links to download both weather station and lightning detector data files Website will be host of current weather variables Skeleton excel file will be made so students can import weather data to view graphs and figures

    12. PENDULUM PROJECT

    13. Purpose To demonstrate and help understand the physical Concept of Pendulum motion to the high school students To produce three working pendulums using electromagnetic force, optical sensors, stopwatches, circuitry, and a car race track to create student’s interest in engineering

    14. Basic Principles Explained Helps in understanding if frequency changes with changing length of the pendulum changing the mass by the use of stopwatch and the race-car track

    15. Proposed Shape of Pendulum (Fall 2004) T-shaped one piece metal rod that is hung from the beam by metal brackets. Ball bearings between rod and brackets reduce friction considerably

    16. Plans for Spring 2005 Use a T – shaped one piece metal rod supported on a knife-edge to reduce friction considerably To account for the small angle approximation, use a spring at the top of the pendulum Use the optical sensors on the side instead of putting them below the pendulum

    17. Questions that need to be answered When will Pendulum frame come back from Women’s Prison circuit diagram Circuit board missing (1) (at Smitty’s) Stop Watch missing (1) (at Smitty’s)

    18. Things Not Working Stop Watch Solenoids not able to hold the Pendulum Circuit Connection with the race-car track (unknown)

    19. Motorized Cart Michael Y. Chung (Project Leader) John Beasley

    20. Problem Identification Physically challenged students have a difficult time coordinating their bodies They are not able to use the regular physical education classroom 4-wheel carts due to their inability to coordinate their feet Mrs. Angela Sutton teaches a class of physically challenged students at Amelia Earhart Elementary School Motorized carts are needed to assist the students in maneuvering around the wooden gym floor in a similar fashion to the 1’ x 1’ 4-wheel cart

    21. Objective To design a device that assists a physically challenged student to interact in an elementary school physical education (P.E.) class Sub-Objective To design and construct a motorized cart which allows the physically challenged student to maneuver on their own while ensuring safety

    22. Current Status Upon reviewing the project status from fall 2004, the motorized cart project team has decided to start over with the Problem Identification Phase of the EPICS Design Process Problem Identification Phase Tasks Identify the problem Determine project objectives Determine motivation for the project Identify outcomes or deliverables Determine duration of the project Identify community partner contact

    23. Current Status Important Dates: January 24, 2005 5:30 PM PHYS 114 Meeting with Fraz Ahmed and Mukund Raghu (previous motorized cart project members) with current motorized cart team members Michael Chung and John Beasley Questions were asked regarding the concluding status of the motorized cart project from fall 2004 January 28, 2005 12:30 PM ME #87 Meeting with Professor Galen King with motorized cart team members Michael Chung and John Beasley Questions that were to be asked to Mrs. Angela Sutton were brainstormed and conferred January 31, 2005 8:00 AM Amelia Earhart Elementary School Meeting with Mrs. Angela Sutton with motorized cart team members Michael Chung and John Beasley All customer specifications were acquired and noted

    24. Current Status Customer Specifications (Results from Mrs. Angela Sutton) Students are roughly 3 feet tall and under 50 lbs. Cart will be used on a wooden gym floor where students can move/roll around Slow speed (roughly walking speed) Children have physical disability where they cannot coordinate the body all at the same time (but hands can be coordinated) Most likely a joystick will be needed for maneuvering Storage of cart can be either upright or flat Motorized cart will be used for a duration of 30 minutes and twice a day Project will be a continuing use for ongoing years Indoor use only An emergency stop function for the teacher would be beneficial The cart should be manageable to move around Flat area use only (no ramps) Velcro straps will be required to secure the student in the cart Child should be oriented either in the sitting position of laying down on their stomach

    28. Current Direction of the Project The motorized cart project team will be entering the Specification Development Phase Tasks Complete users and beneficiaries analysis Evaluate design constraints Develop engineering specifications Compare benchmark projects Determine design targets
