Somebackground… • 2007: Commission on Climate and Vulnerability : “Sweden Facing Climate Change - Threats and Opportunities” • 2009: The County Administrative Boards are given responsibility for coordinating climate change adaptation regionally. SMHI are tasked to support with climate information • 2012: SMHI is tasked to establish the National Knowledge Centre for Climate Change Adaptation • 2013: The County Administrative Boards are given the additional task to investigate local adaptation work and to develop regional action plans. The Swedish National Knowledge Centre for Climate Change Adaptation2012 - • Based at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute • A resource for everybody with a responsibility for, or interest in, Sweden’s adaptation to the impacts of climate change • Provides tools and information to help society cope with a changing climate, now and in the future • Links science, policy and practice, bringing together the decision makers, businesses, research providers and organisations that make adaptation happen • Collects, develops and shares research, information and good examples to facilitate sound decision making • Runs the Climate change adaptation portal, www.klimatanpassning.se

  4. Whoworkswith adaptation today? NATIONALLY no government authority has overall responsibility. Around 30 authorities have sector responsibilities. REGIONALLY the County Administrative Boards have the overarching responsibility. Environmental protection, social care, communications, animal protection, agriculture, reindeer herding, planning, regional development, cultural heritage, the built environment, civil defence, emergency handling, rescue services. LOCALLY the council has legal responsibility for controls and permits, for example under the Planning and Building Act. Water and sanitary systems, energy and waste, hospitals and schools. Emergency planning and rescue services. AND ALSO trade associations, insurance companies, government, industry and an increasing interest from the general public.

  6. Challenges • Resources • Lack of national targets • No national coordination • Difficult to meet high expectations • Designing the “tools” and “examples” areas of the platform SO MUCH TO DO!!!
