  4. Education: • Oxford or Cambridge would not admit a dissenter who criticized the Church of England

  5. Pamphlets: • DeFoe’s pamphlet, The Shortest Way with the Dissenters, landed him in prison when the Church recognized irony.

  6. Life as a spy: • DeFoe agreed to be a spy for the Crown to be, in turn, released from prison.

  7. His novels: • The Journal of the Plague Year and • Robinson Crusoe
