  3. Map Components If you are making a map, be sure to include all of the following! • Title: Identifies the area shown and the topic of the map. • Legend: Explains the meaning of symbols and colours used on the map. • Labels: Identify specific points or regions of interest.

  4. Scale: Compares the distance between points on the map with the actual distance between those points on the earth’s surface. • Direction Arrow: Indicates the direction north on a map. Usually the map is drawn so that north is up.

  5. Rules of Proper Map Making • 1. All maps must have a legend and a scale. • 2. All printing is to be done in pencil. • 3. All lettering should be the same size. • 4. All lettering should be written in a straight line. • 5. Location of cities should be indicated with a circle or square.

  6. 6. All maps need your name. • 7. All maps need to be coloured according to the theme or legend. • 8. All maps must have a compass of North, South, East and West indicated on them. • 9. All maps must have a title. • 10. At the start of creating a map you know that you will not have enough space do not try to cram all of the information in to the small space. Instead do the entire legend on the back of the map.
