  1. By: Nancy Farmer The ear, the eye, and the armliterary techniques

  2. Imagery • “They came down to a large flat field surrounded by hills” pg.52 • This gives a visual of the blank and un eventful Vlei. This helps the reader understand why this is disheartening place.

  3. Irony • “Get me on Dead Mans Vlei and I might as well give you the bus.” pg.40 • Tells that Dead Mans Vlei is a hopeless place that no one wants to go to and the fact that Tendai, Rita, and Kuda are there makes it seem like their in a death trap.

  4. Symbolism • “Beware! Im a deadly mamba. Wrestler of leopards. A hive of hornets. A man among men!” pg. 282 • This is used to show the fierceness and bravery Tendai is showing towards getting away from the mask. This adds a sense of hope to the melancholy situation.

  5. Metaphor • “He goes forth to explore as his ancestors once. Followed rivers to new lands as they stood on hills. Their spirits bold as lightning.” pg.8 • In this piece of a dialogue, the praise singer describes Tendai’s family. This shows that these children come from an important and strong family.

  6. Personification • “the presence that inhabited the mask was prowling. It was waiting for the moment when it would take up residence.” pg. 270 • This text evidence adds a eerie tone to the chapter. This is used to describe the evil the children are dealing with.
