Missouri Compromise • The Missouri Crisis • In 1819 Missouri applied for statehood; wanted to enter as a slave state • The north rejected Missouri's request because they feared it would upset the balance between slave and free states in Congress • The north wanted to make future states in the Louisiana Territory free, while the south wanted to allow slavery. Missouri Compromise • Missouri Compromise of 1820 (Henry Clay) 1.Divided the Louisiana Territory at the 36˚ 30’ N latitude • Anything north (excluding Missouri) would be free territory • Anything south would be a future slave state 2. Maine (free state) was created out of Massachusetts to balance the power between slave and free states in Congress.

  3. Missouri Compromise • Results: • Showed a sharp division between North (Free States) and South (Slave States) • Showed that as the nation added territory, there would be intense debate about whether new territory should be admitted as free or slave.
