  1. Jim A. Norris, Jr. April 4, 2012 Mount Pinatubo

  2. Motivation • I wanted to know what would happen if 5 Pinatubo's occurred at the same time • I was also interested in Sulfur Dioxide Emission role in Pinatubo

  3. Background Info. • in the Cabusilan mountain range separating the west coast of Luzon • 722 people died • 15-30million tons of sulfur Dioxide • Reduced temp. of North Hemisphere By 0.5-0.6 degree’s Celsius • June 1991 • Has not erupted since

  4. Background continue • before during after

  5. Data source • Archived Data from Climatology webpage • Looked at three points in NC: • Southern Mountains • Southern Coastal Plains • Central Piedmont • Assessed Temperature and Precipitation data

  6. Temperature Analysis • Temperature seems to decrease during spring months • Other factors maybe in play

  7. Precipitation Analysis • No relationship between Mount Pinatubo and Precipitation data • Summer months the data follows the same pattern, until Winter when it all scatters

  8. What if 5 Pinatubo erupted at the same time? • How much Sulfur Dioxide would be released?

  9. Sulfur Dioxide vs. Temperature Change • Sulfur Dioxide emissions affected various Volcanoes

  10. What’s Emitted in 5 Pinatubos? • Mount Pinatubo 20 Million tons Sulfur Dioxide

  11. 5 Pinatubos Temperature Change • ~ -1.1°C change in Temperature

  12. Conclusion • You would expect about 100 Million tons of sulfur dioxide • ~ -1.1°C change in Temperature • Change in Precipitation is like a 2 sided coin

  13. Further Research • Look at data from other states • Look at data from other countries • Climate impacts on volcano emissions
