  1. What I did this summerBy: Scott GriffinBay City High School IPC/BiologyJune 2008 • Researched the “Flooding” phenomenon that occurs during countercurrent flow • Mentor: Dr. Karen Vierow • Dr. Isaac Choutapalli • Graduate genius: Nikki Williams

  2. Nuclear engineering for safety

  3. Every last detail matters The goal of engineering is to keep the public safe and never have another accident like these.

  4. How our research project was born • NRC contacted Dr. Vierow; Can the tubes in the steam generator rupture during a LOCA? • Research gave them usable data; Dr. Vierow asked a question, What are the events in the surge line of the pressurizer during a LOCA? • DOE funded research to ascertain the conditions under which flooding occurs during countercurrent flow.

  5. How a pressurized water reactor works

  6. A fuel pellet this size has the power of about a ton of coal

  7. The Reactor

  8. THE PRESSURIZER

  9. How a pressurized water reactor works

  10. THE PRESSURIZER

  11. Surge Line Test Section Drawing

  12. Countercurrent flow Test Section

  13. Monticello Dam

  14. Annular Flow

  15. Annular Flow, down the test section

  16. Flooding

  17. The Data acquisition program

  18. Results from our first test

  19. What I can do with this experience • Countercurrent flow in weather, Sea Breeze, tornado • In water currents, Ocean currents, Tidal surge • Work Power & Energy, Systems, Energy Transformation, Heat transfer • Chemistry, Nuclear, Fusion, Fission, Decay, Half-life, Boron, Zirconium • Biology, Countercurrent flow, environmental, Cancer, Circulatory system

  20. The “Big” Project

  21. THE CREDITS Funding The National Science foundation Gracious Hosting Texas A&M University Wisdom and Knowledge Dr. Vierow Dr. Choutapalli Niki Williams
