  3. HPEC Mission Statement • “High Plains Educational Cooperative will assist and support the member districts in providing educational services which will maximize opportunities for all children to live, learn, and work in society.”

  4. Para educator's Responsibilities: • 1. Implement programs designed by the professional. • 2. Attend the required number of staff development hours. • 3. Send the following forms to the HPEC Central Office: • a. Time sheets - turn in as required. (See Example) • b. Staff Development Plan • 4. Be ready to assume responsibilities as assigned. • 5. Maintain a strict code of confidentiality. • 6. Attend appointment with American Fidelity representative when scheduled at the local district. First week in October. • Complete Section 125 documents provided by American Fidelity representative– even if you are not participating.

Paraeducators should not be responsible for: • Writing lesson plans • Independent communication with staff or parents • Assign grades • Whole class instruction • Giving the student the answer • Doing the student’s work • Your most difficult student 100% of the time. • To provide all of the personal care to a student. (Never ask someone to do what you are unwilling to do.)

  6. Discipline • TOR expectations for students. • Students will perform better if all staff have the same expectations. • Discuss discipline in general education class. • Students will respond to positive requests more than negative correction. • When possible, give students a choice. • You have to be able to live with both choices.

  7. Confidentiality • Discuss student progress and behavior only with those directly involved with the student. • Direct parent inquiries to the supervising teacher. • Direct inter-departmental or inter-school issues to those who can solve the problem. • When in doubt ask. • Those who need to know. • Information for instruction, not moaning, groaning and gripping. • If you need a sounding board, the general education teacher is not it.

  8. Chain of Command • Immediate supervisor • In class-general education teacher • In resource room, special education teacher • Principal • Area Supervisor • Director

  9. In-service and plans • Appropriate in-service for para-educators is up to the supervising teacher. What contributes to professional growth? • They may attend IEP meetings, faculty meetings and local in-services at your supervising teacher’s discretion.

  10. Tiered system of in-service for Para-educators. • Tier 1 Para-educators: have worked as a Kansas special education paraless than 3 years (within the past 3 years) are to complete 20 hours of in-service if employed for 9 months during the school year. • Tier II Paraeducators: have worked as a Kansas special education para for more than 3 years (including the past 3 years) must complete 10hours in in-service if employed for 9 months during the school year.

  11. How can Paraeducators receive in-service points? • HPEC All Staff In-service=5 points. • Passing the ParaPro=20 points (one time only event). Call Ellen at the HPEC office for more information. • District In-service=1 point per contact hour. This does not include breaks, lunch, working in your room etc. • Outside agency in-services as appropriate. E.g. area mental health, hospitals, SRS, CPR, First Aid..

  12. Inservice hours through the Infinitec web site @ www.myinfintec.org. • Directions for access are on page 16 of the HPEC paraeducator handbook. • Paraeducators will need an email address to use the system. • Book Study “The Paraprofessional’s Essential Guide to Inclusive Education”

  13. We believe in growing our own. • We will reimburse para educators for college coursework leading to a degree in education upon approval by HPEC administration. See page 17 of the handbook. Each hour of college credit is worth 20 in-service points.

  14. Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, any person who has worked SEVEN or more years is entitled to 15 cents an hour wage increase by documenting at least 10 staff development points for the previous school year. This is a change from the previous 25 point requirement.

  15. Para educator Staff development plans are due: • Within 30 days of hiring • Before you leave for Christmas Break • Before you leave for Spring Break • Before May 15th • Send a copy of the plan via mail at the designated intervals. • Supervisor signature indicates that they are verifying your attendance.

  16. Timesheets • Should be kept on a daily if not weekly basis. • Should be emailed to hpectime@pld.com on the 15th on each month. • The file name will be lastnamefirst initialyearmonth. No spaces or punctuation. MillerA201208 • Supervisor signature verifies the time worked for HPEC. • Make sure that timesheets turned in match leave forms sent in to the HPEC office.

  17. Leave for Paraeducators • Begin with the 21st day on the job. • 10 leave days, 2 of which may be used for personal leave. • Personal days can not be used during orientation, first or last week of school or the day before/after a regularly scheduled school vacation. (p.11) • Supervising teacher needs to sign your leave form(s) as you qualify for leave. • The file name will be lastnamefirstinitialyearmonthday. MillerA20120807

  18. Maximum # of Hours Paid • Para’s have a set number of contract hours for the year. (no more than 35 hours per week) • Unscheduled closings are built in at 7 hours per year to cover: Snow days; State basketball; Music festivals. • A leave form is no longer required for school closure time. Be sure to include on your timesheet.

If students are not allowed to use theirs during class, then neither should you.
