  6. Communism - Developed by - He wrote the “Communist Manifesto” Karl Marx which explains how he feels a society run this way would work - Instead of people competing against one another, they should join together as equals for the … common good of everyone!

  7. How it became Russia’s Government - From 1896-1917, Russia was a monarchy (they had a king– or in this case – a “Czar” - Czar NicholasII was a poor and cruel leader - There were economic problems - There was starvation - There was anger over involvementinWorld War I - He seemed disinterested in the condition of his economy

  8. Russian Revolution of 1917 Communists then organized and led frustrated workers and peasants in overthrowing the Czar - Revolution was led by Vladimir Lenin and the “Bolsheviks” ( a communist political party that would eventually be known as … “ The Communist Party of the Soviet Union” - They executed the Czar and his family in the palace basement - They eventually install a communistgovernment to run the Soviet Union

  9. Russian Revolution of 1917 - The UnitedStates at first refuses to recognize this new government as an official government - In fact, we had even sent troops over to Russia during this time period to try to stop communists from taking power … …and suffered over 400 casualties - The U.S. would not give their country officialrecognition until 1933

  10. Russian Revolution of 1917 - Vladimir Lenin dies shortly after the revolution ends in 1924 - The question then became …whowillrun the new Soviet Union? There were two major options

  11. Leon Trotsky - Very Intellectual - Gifted militaryleader - Popular among the people

THE RESULTS - Stalin forces out Trotsky and his ideas for Russia. - In 1927, Trotsky is exiled, first to a number of places, then eventually to Mexico where a Sovietagent assassinates him in 1940. -Stalin is then recognized as the official leader of the Soviet Union and begins his ruthless “cleansing” of any opposition. - During these “GreatPurges” over 1 million Soviet citizens were executed an two years for being opposed to Stalin.

  14. “Friend-emies” - The UnitedStates and the SovietUnion become allies for a period of time to defeat Hitler. - When World War II ends, so does our temporaryfriendship!
