  1. What Is Civilization? Class X English Prose

  2. Summary • Nehru revisits definitions of civilization. • He says it is the betterment or refinement of people, and the replacement of savage habits by good ones. Civilization involves society, not individuals. The opposite of civilization, he says, is barbarism. • He then debunks myths about civilization. The wearing of many clothes is mistaken for civilization, but he points out that the quantity of clothes worn by people is often defined by climate. • Similarly, the possession of developed weapons is also seen as a characteristic of civilization although this is also untrue. • Countries that fight wars may seem uncivilized, but these countries may also have those things we consider as being part of civilization: fine things and fine people. • Civilization is therefore difficult to define. Architecture, literature and arts are embodiments of civilization. Civilization ultimately rests on unselfish people who work for common good..
