  2. Microsoft SVVP

  3. Microsoft SVVP • Release Date: 2 September • Headline: VMware ESX is the Industry’s First Hypervisor to be Validated by Microsoft, Offers Customers Expanded Support Options for Microsoft Applications • Key Messages • Microsoft’s Server Virtualization Validation Program enables VMware and other software providers to test and validate their virtualization software to run Windows Server 2008 and previous versions of Windows Server. • Under this program, Microsoft offers cooperative technical support to customers running Windows Server on validated, non-Microsoft server virtualization software, such as VMware ESX 3.5 update 2. • Customers with support policies in place, and running Windows Server-based applications on VMware ESX 3.5u2, can receive cooperative technical support from Microsoft.

  4. Microsoft Support on VMware • VMware ESX 3.5 update 2 is the first hypervisor to be listed under the Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP). The SVVP provides VMware customers who run Windows Server and Microsoft applications with access to cooperative support from Microsoft and VMware. • Microsoft’s Server Virtualization Validation Program enables VMware and other software providers to test and validate their virtualization software to run Windows Server 2008 and previous versions of Windows Server. • VMware also offers an extra layer of protection for customers, outside of Microsoft’s Server Virtualization Validation Program, who work directly with VMware for support. The additional protection is a part of the VMware Premier Support contract with Microsoft that enables VMware to escalate application issues rapidly and work directly with Microsoft engineers to expedite resolution.

  5. Who gets support under this program? • Any VMware customer running Microsoft products with valid support agreements is able to get support under SVVP. • Previous limitations to customers with more expensive support options are eliminated.

  6. Don’t I already get support for products from all the third party virtualization vendors listed by Microsoft on its SVVP program page? • No. The list of vendors that have agreed to participate in the program does not imply support for their products. Each vendor must separately test and validate its product or products to receive support. Microsoft have a link from the SVVP page (http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/svvp/) that lists the third party hypervisors and configurations that have been validated. VMware announced today that it has a supported version of ESX

  7. What versions of ESX are currently supported? • The supported version as of today is for ESX 3.5u2 on AMD servers. The next version to be validated will be ESX 3.5u2 on Intel servers. ESXi 3.5u2 will be validated after that. Support will go forward from 3.5u2. Earlier versions will not be supported under SVVP due to the program’s technical requirements.

  8. How do I get support from Microsoft under SVVP? • You can get support through whatever Microsoft support process you use today. • Microsoft’s support team will verify that you are running in a supported configuration, and will begin assisting you as they do when their products are running on any other supported platform.

  9. Does this change the support that I get from VMware? • No. You can access VMware support exactly as you have in the past.

  10. How does SVVP support work between Microsoft and VMware if Microsoft can not solve the problem? • Our agreement with Microsoft provides for 24/7 joint technical engagement. We do not expect this to be used frequently, since the VMware virtual machine appears to be identical to a physical server from the operating system’s perspective.

  11. How do I get the “extra layer of protection” VMware mentions in its announcement? • First, open a support case with VMware. • If VMware determines that direct engagement with Microsoft will improve the probability of a successful outcome, VMware may choose to escalate the issue under our Premier Support agreement.

  12. What if the application that I want to run is not on Microsoft’s list of supported products for SVVP? • Microsoft still offers support on all products to MS Premier-level Support customers on a “commercially reasonable” basis. • Customers without Premier Support can look to their hardware OEMs or local technology partners for the support that they need. • Products that have passed the SVVP requirements for Windows Server 2008 are considered supported on Windows 2000 Server SP4 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 and later: http://windowsservercatalog.com/item.aspx?idItem=3989e3af-30c0-dee8-8078-960c2ec0e1a6&bCatID=1521

  13. Microsoft’s list of supported products for SVVP: • Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) • Microsoft BizTalk Server • Microsoft Commerce Server • Microsoft Dynamics AX • Microsoft Dynamics CRM • Microsoft Dynamics NAV • Microsoft Exchange Server • Microsoft Forefront Client Security • Microsoft Intelligent Application Gateway (IAG) • Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange (FSE) • Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint (FSP) • Microsoft Host Integration Server • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server • Microsoft Office Groove Server • Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server • Microsoft Office Project Server • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server and Windows SharePoint Services • Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 • Microsoft Search Server • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager • Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager • Microsoft System Center Essentials • Microsoft System Center Operations Manager • Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager • Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) • Microsoft Visual Studio Team System • Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008 • Windows Server 2003 Web Edition • Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) • Windows Web Server 2008 • = 31 Applications in Total • http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957006

  14. Why was VMware late in joining this program? • While the SVVP program was announced in November 2007, Microsoft opened the program to certification submissions in June 2008. • As of September 3, 2008, no other vendor besides VMware had a validated, listed hypervisor.

  15. How will support change for versions of ESX that aren’t supported? • For non-certified versions of ESX, Microsoft support will remain the same. Microsoft’s support policy is defined here • http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897615/en-us

  16. Microsoft Licensing in Virtual Environment: What’s Changed?

  17. Windows Server Licensing in Virtual Environment http://www.microsoft.com/Rus/Licensing/Products/Server/WindowsServer2008/Default.mspx

  18. Life Example

Windows Server 2008 CAL.

  20. Автоматический мониторинг ресурсов Постоянная доступность Производительность по требованию • Масштабируемость, • Гибкость, • Реконфигурация • Полная автоматизация • Доступность приложений Динамическая балансировка Постоянная оптимизация VMotion Tax: It Was Illegal to Move MicrosoftApplications Around Data Center + + X

  21. No More “VMotion Tax” for Microsoft Server Applications • 41 Microsoft server applications have been granted the new licensing flexibility, including SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, Exchange 2007 Standard and Enterprise Editions, and SharePoint Server 2007. Notable exclusions include SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition, SQL Server 2005, and Exchange 2003. • This applies to APPLICATIONS ONLY.  It does not apply to Microsoft server operating systems. The 90-day restriction on license reassignment still applies for operating system licenses. Customers still need to have sufficient operating system licenses for each physical server.

  22. … on the Following Conditions: • For included applications, there is now no restriction on the number of times a license can be reassigned, as long as the following conditions are met: • Volume Licensing - The new licensing provision only applies to application licenses procured under Microsoft volume licensing.  Retail and OEM licenses are excluded. • Two Datacenters Four Hours Apart – Licenses may only be transferred among a “server farm” of up to two datacenters that meet the following proximity restrictions: • The second datacenter is in a time zone that is within four hours of the local time zone of the other (they get specific here - Coordinated Universal Time [UTC] and not daylight savings time!), and/or • Both datacenters must be within the European Union (EU) and/or European Free Trade Association (EFTA) • Additionally, each datacenter may be part of only one server farm. An application license may be assigned to another datacenter, or a datacenter may be assigned to another server farm, however then the 90 day rule will apply. • For further details see: “Application Server License Mobility, August 2008”.

  23. … and • Microsoft’s SVVP and new licensing provisions exclude many server applications that companies run in their production environments (ex. Exchange 2003, SQL 2005, Active Directory, and IIS). • Microsoft’s clause stating that they reserve the right to require customers using 3rd party hypervisors to reproduce any support issue on either 1) a Physical machine or 2) Hyper-V • Microsoft will not support Exchange Server 2007 cluster continuous replication (CCR) and single copy clusters (SCC) features with “hypervisor-based availability or migration solutions” such as VMware VMotion or HA • 31 applications supported under SVVP and 41 granted new mobility licensing rights

  24. Supported vs. Movable
