Issue regarding classification of Hair Straightener 1 Japanese National Committee are realized the requirements of the insulation classification of classⅠ for hair straighteners according to IEC 60335-2-23 was mistakenly made (similar products such as curing irons are class ∐) as a result of simply introducing the hair straighteners in note 101 of Clause 1 of the standard. Japanese National Committee would like to clarify what the issue is, why it was made and how to change the standard, through the explanation of the following items; ■ Principal Changes in Ed. 6th ■ 1 Scope , Note 101 in Ed. 6th ■ Comparison Table of Applicable Requirements to Curling Iron and/or Hair Straightener ■ Standard to be changed 61(Busan/JPNC)30 October 2018

  6. 6 IEC 60335-2-23, Cl 6.1 Classification of Hair Straightener 【Standard to be changed】In order to clarify the classification requirement for Hair Straightener, the underlined pats should be added as follows and we should also note that when introducing a product sample in the standard, the insulation class should be also taken into account. Current Text Appliances shall be of one of the following classes with respect to protection against electricshock: – hairdryers, curling irons, curling combs, facial saunas and other steam-producing or sprayproducingappliancesshall be class II or class III. However, fixed hairdryers intended tobe permanently connected to fixed wiring, helmet-type hairdryers for hairdressers andsteam-producing or spray-producing appliances for hairdressers may be class I; – other appliances shall be class I, class II or class III. Proposed Change Appliances shall be of one of the following classes with respect to protection against electricshock: – hairdryers, curling irons, curling combs, hair straighteners , facial saunas and other steam-producing or sprayproducingappliancesshall be class II or class III.
