What is the mission of high school? • The mission of Addison High School is to provide a solid educational foundation empowering and challenging our students to become lifelong learners with the ability to meet their maximum potential and to develop responsible citizens who are prepared to succeed in an ever-changing society.

  3. Earning a High School Diploma • 1. Meet the Carnegie Unit requirement established by the board. (24 Credits) • A. One Semester Course = ½ credit • B. Two Semester Course = 1 credit • 2. Pass all required areas of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam.

  4. Alabama High School Diploma Options • 1. Alabama High School Diploma (AHSD) • 2. AHSD with Career/Tech Endorsement • 3. AHSD with Advanced Career/Tech End. • 4. AHSD with Advanced Academic End. • 5. AHSD with Credit-Based Endorsement • 6. Alabama Occupational Diploma (IEP Only)

  5. Course & Credit Requirements • All diplomas require 16 Core Credits • 4 credits English Language Arts (9-12) • 4 credits Mathematics (Alg. I, Geom. + 2) • 4 credits Science (Bio., Phys. Sci. + 2) • 4 credits Social Studies (9-12)

  6. Additional Required Credits • 1 credit Physical Education • ½ credit Health Education • ½ credit Arts Education • ½ credit Computer Applications (may be waived and added to electives) • 5 ½ or 6 electives

  7. Diploma Specific Requirements • AHSD with Career/Tech Endorsement requires 3 credits in Career/Tech sequenced program • AHSD with Advanced Career/Tech Endorsement requires Algebra II for 1 of the additional math credits along with the 3 credits in Career/Tech sequenced program

  8. Diploma Specific Requirements • AHSD with Advanced Academic Endorsement requires Algebra II and higher for the 2 additional math credits. It also requires 2 credits Foreign Language. • Foreign Language classes are available through ACCESS Distance Learning. Subjects include French, German, Latin, Spanish and Chinese. • Additional Science credits will be Chemistry and Physics.

  9. Diploma Specific Requirements • The Alabama Occupational Diploma is only available to students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). For specific questions on this option contact the counselor or special education teacher.

  12. How should I make my choice? • Determine your Career Objective • Find out which classes will prepare you to reach that goal • Discuss your thoughts with your parents • Seek advice from teachers • Make the best possible decision for YOU, not your friends

  13. Alabama High School Graduation Exam • Reading – Comprehend textual, functional, and recreational material • Language – Mechanics and expression • Mathematics – Algebra I and Geometry • Science – Biology • Social Studies – United States History

  14. AHSGE • AHSD or AHSD with Advanced Academic or Technical Endorsement must pass all 5 areas of the test • AHSD with Credit-Based Endorsement must pass Reading, Math and at least 1 other area

  15. College Entrance Exams • ACT – Usually taken after the 10th grade; covers English, Math, Reading, Science Reasoning and Writing • SAT – Alternative to the ACT; covers Verbal, Math, and Writing • Compass – Taken before entering college; covers Math and English (Writing & Reading)

  16. Dual Enrollment • Classes offered at Addison High School that earns credit at Wallace State • 12th Advanced English/English 101 & 102 • 11th U.S. History/History 201 & 202 • Cost will be determined by WSCC

  17. Grade Point Average & Honors • All class averages will be used to determine your Grade Point Average (GPA) • Valedictorian/Salutatorian will be determined on the basis of the highest average in the core classes of the advanced academic students
