  3. What is Communication? • Communication-exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another.

  4. Why do we Communicate? • To share our ideas • To inform others • To express feelings

  5. How do Humans Communicate? • Non-verbal communication • Visual communication • Verbal communication

  6. Non-Verbal Communication • Physical • Body language, facial expression • Aesthetic • Instrumental music, dancing, painting and sculpture • Signs • Use of flags, 21 gun salute, horns and sirens • Symbolic • Use of religious or status symbols

  8. Visual Communication • 2D images • Signs, drawings, graphic design, illustrations

  9. Examples of Visual Communication

  10. Verbal Communication • Conversations, discussions, speeches, presentations. • Often “how you say it” is more important than “what you’re saying.”

  11. Pictograms • Cave paintings-early humans painted on walls using ink created from berries and dirt. Also used charcoal. • Petro glyphs-carved into stone or rock. • Pictograms-pictures or icons that represent a specific object or event • Ex: recycling symbol, symbol for bathroom.

  13. Activity • You will have 30 minutes to create a saying only using petro glyphs. Please keep it clean (no swearing, sexual innuendos, etc.) • On the back of your paper, write down the definition. • Once everyone is finished you will present your petro glyph drawing to class to see if the class can guess your saying.

  14. Pictograms (Con’t) • Ideograms-these evolved from pictograms. • Symbols that represent an idea, emotion, or action. Convey abstract concepts. Some ideograms are specific to a particular region or area while others are universal. • Ex. An eye with a tear means sadness to all cultures. • Writing-ideograms eventually evolved into writing form we use today. • Cuneiform/Chinese characters. Arabic and Greek writing system.

  16. Advantages of Writing • Easier to preserve works of literature. • Makes communication more clear with less errors. • Makes communication quicker convenient.

  17. Modern Communication • Information transferred via wave, bits, and other electronic signals. • Instantaneous • Internet and TV • Cell phones

  18. Communication Impacts Civilization • Civilizations-common spoken and written language. • Easier business transactions • Easier to create and enforce laws
