  3. MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH Two primary forms of emotional problems experienced by college students: • Depression – mood accompanied by sadness and self doubt • Anxiety – uneasiness associated with fear, nervousness, or worry Well Being

  4. Symptoms of Depression Depression is sometimes manifested by: • Sadness • Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, pessimism • Inability to be happy • Fatigue and irritability • Thoughts of death or suicide Well Being

  5. Symptoms of Anxiety Anxietyis sometimes manifested by: • heart palpitations • fatigue • nausea • chest pain • shortness of breath • stomach aches • headaches In severe cases, anxiety attacks are experienced Well Being

  6. Dealing with Depression and Anxiety • Maintain an exercise routine • Eat regularly and healthy • Discuss your feelings with someone you trust • Abstain from drinking, smoking, and drugs • Maintain a regular routine • In severe cases, check with the Wellness Center Well Being

  7. PHYSICAL FITNESS Two types of exercise: • Aerobic – jogging, walking, basketball, biking • Strength – weight lifting, yoga, pilates Well Being

  8. Physical Fitness Most Important Rule: Others will have lots of advice on how to keep fit. Find an activity that suits YOU. • Need motivation: Enroll in a PE class • Less need of motivation: Participate in intramurals • No motivation needed: Develop your own fitness program Well Being

  9. Maintaining a Successful Workout Program • Do an activity you enjoy • Develop a routine • Work with a friend who will encourage you • Vary your activities • Keep a record of your activities (e.g., Runkeeper) Well Being

  12. SEXUAL DECISIONS Sexual activity has implications for: • Sexually transmitted disease* • Pregnancy* • Emotional well-being *Detailed information contained in the text. The Student Counseling Center is equipped to advise you regarding personal issues. Well Being

  13. SUBSTANCE ABUSE Substance abuse takes place with: • Alcohol • Marijuana • Cocaine • Ecstasy • Ketamines – Ecstasy • Lysergic Acid Diethylamide • Tobacco Well Being

  14. Symptoms of Substance Abuse • Decreased social, occupational, or recreation activities • Inability to reduce consumption • Relief is found by use • Development of tolerance • Withdrawal symptoms if reduction takes place Well Being

  15. COMPULSIVE GAMBLING • Opportunities to gamble exist on campus and over the internet. • Individuals have left campus because of gambling problems. Well Being

  16. Symptoms of Compulsive Gambling • Secretive about gambling activities • Gambles even when no money • Defensive about amount of gambling Well Being

  17. NUTRITION • Important eating habits: • Try not to skip meals • Eat smaller meals • Choose nutritious snacks • Eat a variety of foods • Avoid fats • Limit sugars and junk food • Eat fruits and vegetables Well Being

  18. Eating Disorders • Anorexianervosa – self starvation • Bulimia – bingeing and purging • Compulsive overeating Well Being
