  4. Definition for Scalawags • Name given by former Confederates to southern whites who supported Republicans Reconstruction of south.

  7. Scalawags • The reason why they called Southerners scalawags is because former Confederates despised the for siding with the Republicans and the word scalawags came from “scoundrel” and “worthless rascal”.

  8. Carpetbagger. • The reason Northerners were called carpetbaggers is because they arrived with all of there belongings in cheap suitcases made of carpet fabric.
