However, the first commercial computer was not invented until 1951 by UNIVAC Computer. IBM entered the computer market two years later. The first microprocessor in 1971 was invented by Intel—and came out just years after the original internet. ( History of the Personal Computer ) First freely programmable computer The “Z1” computer The first consumer computers became available to product markets in 1974/75—and completely revolutionized daily life. Word processors became available during 1979, and Microsoft and Apple slowly began to grow as computer empires during the mid-80s.
