Lowveld Media, Editor Interviews on Protea Tyres Strategic Human Resource Managementu2019s - Training and Development Interventions<br><br><br>Employee engagement is a big discussion point with PWC research, estimating a 450 to 500 Billion USD loss in America alone.<br><br>With Strategic Human Resource Management and EQ training as the answer to the lack of employee engagement, the question is what the impact of the Protea Tyres soft skills or EQ (emotional intelligence) training had on the lives of the learners and interns. <br><br>What the impact is, not only in their work environment but also in their personal capacity and their communities.<br><br>Another question is whether Strategic Human Resource Management combined with the EQ training had an impact on the Companies results and Bottom-line.<br><br>A further question was if SHRM and EQ training had an impact on Management and the individuals coming from rural environments absorbed into the business environment, and the mobility from entry positions into leadership positions. <br><br>The thinking was to have interviews with the management of companies, the individual employees and the community members the learners and interns, interacted with.<br><br>This includes interviews from the newspaper, radio and Dstv television interviews that will feature on the relevant Dstv programs.<br><br>Matthys Ferreira - Motoring Editor at Lowveld Media did the first round of interviews <br><br>The results indicate that Protea Tyres Strategic Human Resource Management utilising EQ training combined with the rest of the Protea Tyres Development Program was found to be impressive and valid as an industry benchmark.<br>

  1. Johan v Oudtshoorn - Director at Thomas Tyres Interview: Matthys Ferreira - Motoring Editor at Lowveld Media 14 June 2016 Johan v Oudtshoorn is a director at Thomas Tyres. With more than 40 years in the industry, serving in various operational and management positions (National Sales Manager – Continental, South Africa; National Sales Manager – Bandag, South Africa), knows what the demands and challenges of companies are. “In-house and product training by the various manufacturers to enhance the service delivery by suppliers in the tyre and undercarriage environment is of a high standard,” says Johan. “I can however unequivocally state that the Protea Tyres staff that we took over when we acquired the business is undeniably better skilled, more motivated and productive than those who have undergone, what the industry would generally considered to be the required standard. They are well-rounded – have excellent communication abilities – whether dealing with customers or colleagues. Their ability and in particular, their better than average attitude towards their job and life in general, enables them to achieve targets and take the initiative. There is less need for continues input and direction from managers. Their ability to manage conflict with a calm and non-confrontational attitude makes them invaluable for an employer.

  2. These employees, and many of them have since become supervisors and managers, are tough task masters and teachers but they are infinitely fair and humanistic in sharing knowledge and skills. In the past, when recruiting new staff, those who completed a Protea Tyres internship or learnership, became without exception, the preferred candidates and appointees. The internship or learnership as it was presented and taught by Protea Tyres should, in my mind, become the industry standard. Should there be a training and development “production line” of students with these skills, they will be the preferred candidates with recruitment for various positions in our company and I believe for other companies as well.
