  1. A CAUTIOUS CONSERVATIONIST’S VIEW OF STEWARDSHIP CONTRACTING

  2. WHY DO IT AT ALL? • Budget $$$$? • To provide local mills with timber supply? • To mimic natural fire regimes? • To reduce fuel loads? • To restore damaged watersheds/areas?

  3. OPPORTUNITIES • Degraded watersheds • WUI • Fisheries • Big game ranges • User-created trails • Road densities • Fire Ecology?

  4. RED FLAGS AND CONCERNS • Wildlife habitat impacts • Designation by description/privatization • Size of cut in order make the $$$ work out • Road decommissioning “on the cheap” • Monitoring/feedback/accountability • Roadless lands

  5. A CHANCE TO PROVE THE SKEPTICS WRONG? • Measured, scientific, ecologically sound projects • Not an excuse simply to cut trees • Build trust carefully

  6. IN APPROPRIATE PLACES

  7. NOT IN INAPPROPRIATE PLACES

  8. TO BE TRULY COLLABORATIVE AND SUCCESSFUL • Must have agreement on the reason and the goal • Must be a transparent and inclusive process • Must have independent monitors • Must build trust with each project
